why is pvp combat so laggy?
i'm new to elden ring so i don't know if maybe i'm connecting the wrong way or something, but every time i either invade or get invaded 5 seconds into the fight my hits stop registering and the enemy loses animations and the whole fight just goes to ♥♥♥♥. am i doing something wrong? or is pvp just laggy like that?

Its the usual, recently had a fight where the other player took a solid 5+ secs to die after bombarding them with hits, i even though they were cheating for a sec.

If it happens every single time, I'd say it's probably something on your end. For me connections are fine most of the time except late at night, during those hours it's more common to have bad connections.

PvP is just laggy like that yes. And no, they won't fix it, ever. Because it has been this ♥♥♥♥♥♥ since DeS (4 games and 2 console generations ago).

Honestly I'd advise finding another game to do PvP in if that's your thing. Not to say that some people here don't get into it but... the game is about precision and timing, yet both of those go out the window in PvP due to the lag. Not exactly a winning choice to me.

No idea how some people can deal with the constant lag when they PvP. It's already a ♥♥♥♥-fest as is but you toss in some horrible desync and it becomes unbearable. Even Co-op can be ♥♥♥♥ when you hit an enemy and it doesn't register until a second later and they still hit you because they didn't get interrupted.

And that's why I stopped assisting with Malenia fights. The desync really screws up the rhythm of that fight...

What would you have them do though? Send a guy to everyone's house to set up them up with a decent internet connection?
Well how about do the one thing that pretty much every multiplayer IP does to eliminate the latency problem: dedicated servers. Though knowing bandai they would still be disconnecting us constantly. Still, after 4 games of this they need to either put some actual effort into their multiplayer or drop it entirely.

Didn't need to write an entire essay for that by the way.

Well I like to explain because very few people have an actual grasp of even basic networking, let alone something as complex as online gaming.

Do you really want another essay on why dedicated servers come with their own host of issues? It's definitely a monkey paw style wish
They eliminate the latency problem (as long as they're not cheap crap anyway... and this is Bandai unfortunately so...), which is what we're talking about.

Sure there are tradeoffs, but the performance is better when its done correctly. FROM isn't a small studio anymore, nor are they new to their particular genre. So I stand by what I said earlier.

Well they don't eliminate it. The issues just manifest differently. The experience vs a high latency player is still going to suck immensely. There is a lot to unpack and unless you really understand how this stuff works, well it's gonna be a big essay 😅
They CAN manifest randomly, doesn't mean they will for certain (which is the case with P2P). There are also other countermeasures to lessen the possibility for that to happen, namely ping filters (even if they're a little basic) or matchmaking servers.

Again, its all about the effort you put into it. It can be done without significant latency, and it can be done pretty consistently. FROM just doesn't want to put in any of the effort, which is why I'm confused as to why MP exists in ER to begin with (with a new IP it would have been the perfect excuse to ditch it).
