But the startup is a bit rough, and with low vigor you'll die a little fast before you can figure out how, and how to avoid it. It's a bit of a slow burn, and you basically have to learn the tricks and the timing a little to get on.
I'll spoiler one bit to make things easier; you can get to the ruins and there's 2 sites of grace there, rest and talk. And if you teleport from there back to the church with the merchant, there'll be someone to give you a horse and a thing to summon spirits that help with fighting.
If you can't get a refund, and it seems too frustrating now, getting back to it later might indeed be the best idea.
I kinda hated DS at the beginning. Finished the game a year later when I was in the mood for it. Had plenty of fun with it.
