Invasions - Why?
OK, so I am new to the game, only 25 hours in or so and still running around like a chicken with my head cut off, LOL! So, there are certain areas that I avoid now because I get knocked off my horse and some dude in all red summons from nowhere and obliterates me. YOU ARE BEING INVADED! I mean, I literally have zero chance to beat this guy. Is this a real person who is randomly killing me in PVP mode?

It doesn't really seem like a fair fight and I can't run away fast enough, and worse of all I lose all my runes and can't get them back. Is this an online thing only, maybe if I play Offline it won't happen? I don't mind the idea, however I wish the enemy would at least scale to my level so I don't die EVERY SINGLE TIME! Ha ha ha. I need some advise maybe, thx.

You can be invaded by other players as soon as any kind of cooperator is present, whereas it doesn't matter if said cooperators is an npc or a player.
Edit changed it, thank you for da clarification.

Yes! the guy under the bridge! OK, and there was another one in a swamp area who was a true killer as well! I guess I should evade him long enough until help arrives. Do all of these invaders come along with other NPC's who help out?

So is there a purpose or a theme with the invasions? I guess if it was part of the story I would be a little more open to it but it seemed so random at first. I didn't especially like the fact that my ride out of there went away, then I got pummeled!
Just for clarification: you will never interact with other real players unless you use any of the multiplayer-centric items that are listed as such, like Furcalling Finger Remedies, Furled Fingers, Small Effigies, etc.

The only one I'm not sure of is if you can be invaded by real players while you have a friendly NPC Summon with you (but I assume you can't).

You can only be invaded by real players if you have a real player already summoned or if you use the Taunter's Tongue item (which opens solo invasions).

When it comes to NPC Invaders, they do not all come with a friendly summon, only a few have an ally with you from the start and the one with Nejirus has a delay for some reason with Yura.

Most of the preset NPC Invasions are either their own ordeal with the character having their own history but not much lore shown from the fight, and others ones are tied to some questlines. There's still a fair bunch that are there mostly for the sake of it though.

You may also find rare instances of a red summon sign sitting out somewhere that asks if you want to invade the world of so-and-so, and those ones are also NPC invasions where you are the invader. It's not too different outside of you having the restrictions of being an invader like lowered flasks and whatnot. It usually doesn't hurt to do these unless you don't want to progress a questline of someone for some reason.

Wow, great information thanks! Haven't found the red summon sign as of yet but may have missed it too. That would be cool. If you die, does your runes drop in the other world then?

You can only be invaded if you're hosting a world with other players or joined another players world as a cooperators. Those ones in the story are NPCs, usually they correlate with some questline.

Can you get random people to play coop with you or is it and invite thing only? thx

Go to first step side of grace. There is little statue nearby. Make sure you didn't set up any multiplayer password. Use furlcalling finger remedy and you shall see gold signs on the ground near statue. You can summon two people. Once they spawn expect an invader to pop up aswell within few minutes. Players summoned this way will be around your level. If you want to do like an invite thing, then you have to cooperate with someone like set the same password. The level requirement is lifted. They place their sign somewhere in the world and you have to find it. Of course you still need to use furlcalling finger remedy to reveal the gold signs.

Considering you're probably still in Limgrave only, I don't think you'll be finding any red marks yet, and I can only think of a few tied to some questlines. On my first playthrough I only found one, since I ditched the questilne/missions that had you go through a bunch.

And iirc, you're runes will be dropped in your world still but generally around where you died in the invaded world. It's like the same logic that Evergaols work with.

It also only pairs you with players who are within a certain weapon upgrade range (and it differs from weapons upgraded with normal Smithing Stones and Somber Smithing Stones). If you're ever interested there's a summon range calculator on the wiki that can help you out.

If you play witheout summoning players you can't get invaded by players , so that means the ''bad red people'' are npc , most of the time when you kill red npc you get nice weapons or armor so it's 100% worth it to try and kill them ( or comeback a bit latter when you are more prepared)
There is actually lore and some side stories that precede/follow those invaders.

mini-spoiler: some quests have you be the invader!

Ah! OK, I like that. I will get better and occasionally try to kill them. So if you kill them will you be able to come back and fight them again or just until you defeat them? Thx

This will never get old.

When I started ER I already knew there were no solo invasions but when Nerijus arrived, just for one second, I thought it was a real player and I was ready to go to town. The excitement died as quickly as it came.

LMFAO I came expecting some bait thread about how "red man bad" and PvP should be removed from the game but this is gold. Ah, the newbie Souls experience

As for offline phantom scaling, I don't think they do. This means NPC tarnished tend to have much higher HP than players, but less flasks/damage

Same and I was playing mage so he dodged everything I did. Plus yurah always took his sweet time showing up. Learned about star shower tho and how it forces npcs to dodge too early, same with rock sling

So this game is brutal, and doesn't tell you much! However, this has got to be one of the best games I have played in a hack and slash type game. I am happy with the support this game has too. I'm now even looking at other games in the genre, such as the other Souls games and Sekiro. Wow, I have been missing this for sure. And knowing what I know now, I would have paid full price for it too! Glad I could share my humble experience. Off to die once more!
