Can anyone tell me the point of Greatshields?
Seems like they really don't provide any benefits further than what you can get from medium shields. If you meet 100 percent physical damage negation, that's all that matters. Sure, some have a few more points of guard boost which is nice, but it doesn't really seem to justify the massive increase in weight. The only benefit I can think of is the few that have offensive ashes, but those have always seemed so inefficient to use for me. I get way more use out of a medium shield that I can parry with.

Are there any playstyles I'm missing that would benefit from greatshields that I couldn't just do with a medium shield?

Its an old video and i didnt practice for this run
i basically just put a Greatshield on and filmed it
-> i made many mistakes
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcbmgwNPhlo&t=1s

So result is not too impressive
but it shows Greatshield can even beat Malenia

Pretty amazing you can just tank her first Waterfowl wave and be in a convenient spot to have her whiff the other two. A shame she can still recover health from shield hits, though.

Now I gotta try a proper strength tank build.

yeha

1.) use shield to block (i use barricade shield so she heals less)
2.) roll forward with correct timing (not difficult and will always work after 3-4 practice runs)
3.) after roll -> walk directly into her as soon as you can after roll from 2nd flurry is done -> meaning try to really facewalk straight into her
and as soon as the camera turns make a fast and hard " C " on your controller stick
like really slam that stick in a half circle (C-form) with confidence

and you are fine

Be more open minded......some "ultra" heavy shields are weapons, allowing you to play with a quite unique style.

The frog freaks are terrible test subjects....considering they have insane fire resistance but im sure you get the point.

This is the Elden Ring version of a heavy flamethrower. As you can see it even staggers monsters and of course shields you while you are using the ash of war (it drains extra stamina).

This is a mortar! Manually targeting and trying to calculate the projectile you can nuke monsters faaaaaaaaaar away. Also it shields you during the projectile charging animation acting like some extremly funny explosion/parry blowing away anything trying to hit you.

Both shields ashes of war damage can be greatly improved by using Alexander shard talisman and whatever buffs fire damage.

Think outside the box and experiment more!

Aside from anything else, they look really cool and that's what it's all about.

I think people just got over confident (myself) in playing without a shield and killing things in Demon Souls/Dark Souls. And at some point I completely forgot they existed. After seeing some newbie friends use them to outrageous effect, I can confirm they're ridiculously good if you build for them. The true easy mode of the game.

I think weapons are more likely to bounce off of greatshields, thus they are better for guard counters.

Like the people in DS1 who would get Havel's Set and immediately put it on thinking that much armor was their ticket to victory instead of learning attack timings.
Cause it works. You can tank through the game with it relying primarily on faith healing and estus flasks to make up for a lack of skill. Here, Elden Ring is less forgiving, yet greatshields definitely serve a place in absorbing hits because my medium one will get one tapped by bosses and leave you constantly staggered. The only way a medium shield becomes viable mid game and beyond is by using Barricade Shield Ash of War to cut down your stamina consumption.

I don't actually use a shield much in combat but wear the icon greatshield in between battles for regenerative purposes. It's twice as fast as the talisman. Still, there are occassions where a shield is useful when you can't roll away from AOE damage.

its not easy mode. Your friends just played the game normally, while you made it harder for yourself by ignoring accessories and trying to brute force everything with a Cirque du Soleil playstyle.

Honestly, I just like the aesthetic of greatshields. But yeah, wielding a maxed out fingerprint shield with the greatshield talisman and tanking everything in the game without watching your stamina go down at all is great (everything cept magic, etc.).

what is the point of a shiled ? XD
Sabaithal 6 ENE 2024 a las 22:27
If you get a greatshield with high innate guard boost (70ish) its leagues better than any medium shield, especially when upgraded.

Also a lot of enemy attacks bounce off your shield, staggering your opponent. For example: Dual-wielding banished knights. Yet another enemy people have a lot of issues with that is trivialized simply by using a greatshield.
