Stuttering on RTX 4070 Laptop
I recently got a new laptop, and I was excited to see how well it would run this game. The results were fairly disappointing, and I want to know what the issue is because my PC should easily run this game on paper.

For reference, my old laptop had the following specs and ran this game at 45-50 fps:

1920x1080 60Hz monitor
Intel i7-9750H CPU
GTX 1660 Ti Max-Q GPU
16 GB 2666MHz DDR4 RAM
512 GB NVMe SSD

My current laptop has:

2560x1600 240Hz monitor
Intel i9-12900HX CPU
RTX 4070 Laptop GPU
16 GB 4800MHz DDr5 RAM
1024 GB NVMe SSD

My CPU basically idles between 10% and 20% usage while playing Elden Ring, but my GPU will go up to 100% outdoors, and then I get a lot of stuttering and drops to 50 fps. I checked my temps, and the GPU is running at under 80 degrees Celsius, usually around 70-74 degrees, so it shouldn't be throttling. VRAM usage stays at around 4 out of 8 GB, so I'm not maxing out my VRAM. I know my new monitor has basically 2x as many pixels as the old one, but my RTX 4070 GPU should be more than 2x better than the wimpy 1660 Ti that I had....What is going on here?

I think it's my GPU lol. I lowered the resolution, and that stopped the stuttering issues. I guess a laptop RTX 4070 isn't quite good enough to handle 1600p resolution in Elden Ring. If only this game had FSR or DLSS...

If your using a MSI laptop - you have to register the game to MSI center - within gaming mode.

Companies LOVE to overblow their specs to hike up the price and impress buyers, but in reality, a laptop with a high-end GPU can't really do the same as a desktop with the same GPU. Sometimes this has nothing to do with the GPU being a laptop model, even, but more so the companies putting something together that can't handle what they advertise. This is why Valve has a low-res display on the Steam Deck, as it was pointless to put more pixels if 1) the Deck can't reach its top performance with a high-res display and 2) it would make zero difference visually for the user.

I got a Dell laptop with a 3060 and while at first I could run a bunch of games at 60-120 FPS, 1440p, it's come to a point where I now have to compromise one way or another. If a game makes my fans go wild, I usually set the FPS to 30 and the resolution to 1440p with graphics on high, as even 1080p, 60 FPS with graphics on medium or low can make the machine overheat. I also can't really play online games while in a Discord call, as most settings make the laptop overheat either way.

I've been gaming with laptops for a little over 10 years now, so I learned to compromise. That's usually what we have to do, sadly. If only they didn't use flashy features to light up buyers' eyes, maybe this wouldn't be the case -_- But sometimes, 1080p on a display capable of 1440p is noticeable. Not always, I found out, but sometimes.

E cores sucks, deactivate the e cores and test.

I'm not sure but maybe someone in this discord can help you with the configuration https://discord.com/channels/316038965624963072/586709658803240964

2560x1600 should be 0 problem for a 4070 even if its a laptop one..... (massivly reduced clock speeds due to heat problems in laptops)

i play 2560 x 1440 on a 2080TI and all maxed 60fps my card only needs 30% of its maximal power....

if indeed your problem is the 4070 its not lack of power but
lack of cooling !

A Laptop 4070 is about the same speed as a RTX 2080 desktop
thats more than enough for WQHD when you turn raytracing off

This scares me. I've been wanting to buy a 4070 gaming laptop (asus a15) but I never realized the laptop 4070 has only 8vram and the desktop version 12vram.

Generally, it's not good to game on a laptop because of all the heat.
Electronics don't like heat.

The excess heat is there because all the components are jammed into the small space.
There is no cooling solution that can overcome it, and what's there tends to get very loud.

It's best to just web browse on cheap laptops and game on a full desktop tower.

Finally, nobody should own a gaming laptop.
They shouldn't even exist.

I agree.
The idea of gaming laptops itself is pretty meh....

Fast hardware produces lots of heat.
Laptops cant handle heat well...

So now you have this thing that you take a 4070 chip ... reduce ram and clockspeed massivly so that it doesnt overheat in a laptop....

When you run a 4070laptop on max power target it has about the same speed as a RTX 2080 desktop

if you reduce power target in some cases its as slow as a 1070 desktop.

So yeha what poster above says could also be important with having windows and nvidia settings on max power

You probably have ray tracing on, try putting it on low or medium. This should fix it for 1600p.
