ELDEN RING

ELDEN RING

So why does my character even want to be Elden Lord?
I'm not asking for an overall explanation of the lore or anything close btw. I am strictly speaking about what the player knows at the start of the game, nothing else(I am not that far in yet).

For example in DS1 you're awoken to rekindle the fire because everything will go dark and lifeless if you don't(well that's what you're being told anyways) so that would be pretty bad for your character as well, in DS2 you set out to break the curse of the undead, the opening hints at this curse being pretty detrimental to your domestic home life as well.

In Elden Ring I wake up supposedly from the dead and I am told to go become a Lord. Even more, that is made out to be what everyone wants to be, no questions asked. Is that it? Why would I want that? The whole realm seems like a dumpster fire, I don't wanna rule over that.

Just from a role playing perspective: Is that it or was there something I missed at the start? I took great pleasure in killing Godrick with a throwing knife to disrespect him for the vile stuff he does at his horror castle but overall I lack a bit of role play motivation to go around killing these demi god weirdos compared to previous Soulsborne games.

Seems like you are one of the chosen to be "cursed" or "blessed" to keep trying, getting resurrected, to make the progress required by the powers that be or until their grace is exhausted. If you use your imagination it's not difficult see why. Perhaps achieving the goal sets you free from your bond and allows more freedom than you can imagine.

i mean considering that the game has multiple endings... your character doesn't actually want anything until you choose what it wants
because there nothing to do.

I feel this is more a question about why you as the player are upon awakening in a strange land deciding to fight your way through things rather than say cowering and letting death take you or staying in a safe area and I think that is largely do to the guidance of grace pointing you in a direction and you likely being a warrior prior to waking up in the lands between and those lands being full of never ending threats. You also have the people you interact with slowly pointing you to that end. At first you are simply exploring the lands while defending yourself and trying to understand where you are and how to leave or better your situation until you realize all has become tarnished and the only way to get a life you agree with or can live with is by taking the throne for yourself and fixing these lands..... or burning them to cinders, etc. the motivation I see they put in pretty clearly tbh but yeah.

I did it for the ladies.
~I did it for the ladies, I did it for the men, I did it for the wolf-guy with the big rear end~
That's up to you. Its YOUR character. Its not like the character has any dialogue lines.

Untrue, there are plenty of lines. "Graaaah!", "Hey!", and "Aaaaaaagh!" to name just a few. Very riveting dialogue.
Because if you didn't want to be Elden Lord, you wouldn't have become Tarnished.
