Exactly what triggers this to become active?

If it's the one I'm thinking of, you have to activate it from the bottom which is inside the capital itself. Although, there were some animation glitches that could get you to survive that fall and enter the capital early.

Not seeing any direct entries for that. There are a number of things that "divine bridge elevator" could potentially describe. Where exactly is this?

I think it's the place you can reach via teleporter in weeping peninsula, where you find a halberd golem and the dew talisman. It can be reached through the cathedral/manor from the side courtyard with the abductor virgins.

When you teleport in, the lift is down and cannot be raised from the top.

You mean the trapchest that teleports you to Leyndell? Yeah, I have no clue how to activate that elevator unfortunately.

You can fast travel out of there though.

In the room where you find the invasion sign for one of the volcano manor missions (Vagram), there is a side door that opens to a courtyard where you find 2 abductor virgins and a stormhawk axe. The bottom of the lift is in there.

But you can't get to the bottom. The elevator is the only way in to the capital's castle (which looks suspiciously like Round Table Hold...), isn't it? So it's gotta have some kind of progression trigger that activates it.

Nah, you get inside that building when you enter the capital properly later in the game.

My guess is you have to enter capital proper, either through draconic tree sentinel or deeproot depths, and activate some grace inside. It's not true it activates only by going from the bottom, because in my current run I went from the top to the virgins downstairs by that elevator, the switch was working, but I did most of the exploring except the very top and morgott by then.

You enter fortified manor in the capital, its the bulding that is like the Roundtable, open a large door on the bottom floor, and either fight 2 abductors or try and run past them to the bottom of that lift.

Well, I tested about 4 different sites of grace after the Draconic Knight and none of them are the trigger. How very odd.

Did that. Heck, I even opened the door on the side that I thought wasn't openable which leads to the bottom of the elevator. Still doesn't work.

That elevator is basically only there to let you ascend to the upper area if you (somehow, beyond all reason) missed the Tower of Return teleport in Weeping Peninsula. Once you get the Divine Bridge Site of Grace, it no longer has any meaning.

You must activate it by reaching it from below, which you do by entering the Roundtable Hold lookalike by hopping through an exterior balcony on the left side of the building.
You can reach the courtyard outside rather simply from the West Capital Rampart Site of Grace, the reaching of which involves hopping up the wing of the giant dragon corpse casually hung up in the middle of town.

I would have *sworn* in one game I used that elevator to descend into the Fortified Manner without having reached the elevator from the bottom... Guess I'm just remembering wrong. =-\

I remember someone saying you could descend using that elevator from the top, if you manage to get invaded and the invader uses the lift button at the bottom to travel up to find and kill you. That activates the switch? I don't know if that's correct. :-/

Try using a Furcalling Finger Remedy and the Taunter's Tongue at the top and hope someone arrives to find and 'help' you get down by mistake?
