Great runes are a half-baked concept
When I got the first one from Godrick, I assumed there would be more to it than just some basic stat buffs. Weirdest part is, Godrick's great rune is easily the best - ironic considering he's supposedly the "runt" of the demi-gods. The rest either don't compare (why would I bother with Radahn's great rune when Godrick's not only gives me extra HP, FP, and stamina but also increased stats equivalent to 40 levels?) or are way too situational to be useful (Malenia's great rune nerfs your healing flask, you don't get that much health back from hitting things, and you have an extremely short window to actually get your health back before it's gone and you need to heal using your nerfed crimson flask. Also, by the time you get it, you've basically already beaten the game so there's nothing to use it on and it doesn't carry into NG+).

Maybe this system will be expanded in Shadow of the Erdtree?

Yeah it's pretty bad.

I don't think they'll do much with it in the dlc either. But at least Malenia's rune will be usable for more than 5 minutes with the expansion.

They should've made runes activate on their own after boss fights like it does in ds3/demon souls and give them way more variety in what the effects of each do.

Radahn's should've been equipment load boost with maybe a defensive stats boost and Morgott maybe a status build-up boost. Idk some things that actually help different playstyles.

It's probably not as good as it could be since it's their first time doing it.

Godrick's Great Rune is no longer as useful once you've surpassed various soft caps.

I've seen some people do really interesting things with the other ones. But I haven't myself. I did a lot of co-op on a character I no longer play, so that's where the majority of my Rune Arcs are. I just don't have enough on other characters to weave them into normal gameplay.

Radahn's rune is for when you're stupidly high level, I think, so his percentage boosts produce silly results. Until that point, Godrick's rune wins.

And it's pretty lame that the only runes worthy of attention really are those two and Rennala's (which is just for respeccing).

Lol it’s pretty funny that they gave the worst great rune to the hardest boss.
Morgott's great rune is my crutch.

Edit: From Fextra: Increases health by 25%. This multiplier gets applied after all other health increasing buffs, equipment, and spells.

Actually that rune is a beauty even if not immediately apparent. It basically turns the Dark Souls style combat into Bloodborne style combat which is fun af. I'm going to do a ng+ run using no health flasks and only her rune I think.
I'm not sure you can. The fact that you have to kill her to get it means going through The Haligtree, which means you have to get as far as Mountaintops, which is most of the way through the game already :\

Good luck with this when the game is designed around the mechanic. That giant ass chunk of health you lose isn't going to be gained again, maybe a tiny spec or so.

They do not carry over to NG+.

That’s a pretty cool idea lol, let us know how it goes. I may have to try that to spice up my merchant runs. But yea you’d have to B line it to Melania cause they don’t carry over :(

Sadly its not really the bloodborn rally system as multi hit moves(Which is most boss moves) compeletely gut the ability to heal from it unlike in Bloodborn.

As in multi hit moves you can only heal % of the FINAL hits damage not the full combo.

Also the heal % from hits is abysmal compared to Bloodborn as well.

Its a really botched imitation of Bloodborn's rally sadly.

Oh I forgot about that rune. Yea ♥♥♥♥ what I said earlier.

Second worse 😂

What Mohg's rune should have been:

1. All mobs in the area get a 20% damage buff for 20 seconds whenever blood loss is triggered in their vicinity.

2. The invader spawns with a single-use consumable that summons a sanguine noble (carries the bloody helice and uses bloodflame magic) to fight with them. Using this could come with a hefty HP cost on use.
