Mages also likely have Moonveil, which is predictable but still dangerous if they know how to punish/rollcatch with it.
...
...
I'll take my leave now...
most mages i fight tend to constantly backpedal while spamming projectiles, which creates a situation where i am constantly chasing them and having to dodge complex volleys of projectiles. then if i finally get close - moonveil. yes, i can react to moonveil just fine, and no its not the most OP weapon ever, but its WA is very high damage and very difficult to punish - so im forced to roll it, and the mage can begin backpedaling and running away again as i'm coming out of my roll, which starts the whole annoying as ♥♥♥♥ process over again.
backpedaling/passive play is something that is EXTREMELY powerful in souls pvp, but in general it takes ALOT of experience before a player realizes just how powerful it is. when you add high damage, difficult to roll projectiles to this, it can make some fights very very frustrating.
one of the most frustrating parts of these kinds of fights is that it can require considerable skill on the part of the person dodging the projectile spam and trying to approach the mage, but it does not really take any skill on the part of the mage - all you really need to do is lock on, hold your thumbstick back, and spam a small handful of difficult to dodge spells. there is very little timing required, no spacing required, and the mage is at very very low risk of getting punished/taking damage - its a massive skill imbalance. if you want to fight a mage, you need to be somewhat decent at the game, to play mage, you really just need to watch a quick youtube vid on the best dueling spells, backpedal and spam pew pews.
>Star shower? Even pre-nerf stars of ruin was easy to roll.
pre nerf stars of ruin was literally impossible to fully roll with normal med roll. your statement here is simply 100% untrue, and if cast at the proper range, star shower is also very difficult to fully roll - you will almost always take some damage. if you spam roll to the left or the right, you will avoid most of the star shower, but in a duel situation where you cannot heal, even that little bit of damage from the one or two bullets you couldnt fully roll out of the six that star shower shoots is very meaningful...and its basically free, unavoidable damage for the mage.
>Swift glintstone shard? Strafe.
swift shard is strafeable on low latency. swift shard is NOT strafeable on medium-high latency, which is most fights.
>Comet? Reactable.
comet is very easily reactable, but when you spam it, you get the faster "chaincast" animations on subsequent casts. this creates a situation where your opponent has to lock themselves into roll spam based on predicting how many times you will spam comet. if a player does not time their rolls extremely well or they make a bad read, the faster "chaincast" comet animations can easily rollcatch and deal HUGE damage, all while the mage is on the other side of the arena, at no risk whatsoever of getting punished or taking damage from a melee player.
a huge part of the problem is the arena size/shape - the arena is way to big, and its circular shape allows players to basically run away forever. solving many issues balance issues associated with mages in the arena could be solved by adding maps that are smaller, and have corners, like a square or rectangle shape, and not by making changes/nerfs to the sorceries themselves. a smaller, square arena means that a backpedaling mage will very very quickly run into a wall or get trapped in a corner, forcing them to fight up close and react to attacks instead of just running away to spam more pew pews.
>why casuals are so offended by new interesting mechanics?
tldr - because they are not interesting, and because its frustrating and not fun to play against passive, backpedaling mages. im here to have fun, and if youre running a build thats only fun for you and very annoying for everyone else, im just gonna go with bhs pikes and get it over with so i can get to the next match and hopefully have a fun fight with someone who is willing to engage in actual combat.
Greetings, brothers! What's going on in...this...thread.

Brother. Get the flamer.

The heavy flamer, right?
On a side note, anyone here play Deathwing by any chance? Been wanting to get into that game, but I hear the SP is terrible
No, Brother. We must call for the Incinerator. Emperor preserve us, we need his Knights.
The Inquisition has arrived.
An exterminatus is the only way to be certain, brothers. Let us burn this heresy from the galaxy.
Here, have like all the versions plus played Space Hulk years ago. I guess it can be entertaining but the AI sucks sadly.....you are going to have more fun with this video than the game.

Being on topic and Elden Ring related of course......why you had to use the word "casual" in a despective way OP? you got the rest right, even you managed to live in the memory of some of your little bitter friends coming here to show you footage of their PVP matches with you.
Everything has a counter and can be avoided if you actually have some game knowledge so thank you for the post and actually sharing useful tips about how to dodge stuff like the comet facemelter to whoever needs them.
Bless you all.
