the range is just horrible and with the bad boss hitboxes you will get hit a ton simply due to a big area around the boss being a hitbox even when the weapon hits completely somewhere else and you need to get close
damage wise normal spears are terrible
but they become godlike with seppuku ash of war
or... a staff used only to bonk people.
Torches having melee attacks is probably a 'just in case' scenario
You could definitely earn hipster points for using it... because no one else does. There's no reason for them to. Even the Weathered Sword and the Shortsword, its competitors among the bad swords, are obtainable at the start of the game. Making them better options since the Cane isn't acquired till Leyndell.
