Black Knife question
I see co-op summons use this all the time on boss fights. Does the ash of war permanently reduce the bosses hp? I'm seeing mixed info online saying the effect goes away after a time or that it stays the entire time.

No.

The Destined Death effect lasts for awhile before it wears off. For boss fights it's mostly useless as most bosses cannot heal anyway and in co-op, with a good team the boss will be dead before it wears off.

So the gray portion of the bosses health bar when the ash of war is used on them, that amount of health will come back after a time?

Yes, but that just indicates that their max HP is lowered. If this is a boss that can heal, they could only heal up to 23,000HP vs 25,000HP while Destined Death is in effect, for example.
Sounds useless then I wonder why I've been seeing a ton of people use it.

It does remove the first 10% of their max hp. I'm not finding anything that says they heal back that lost hp when the effect ends.

However since its the first 10% the hp reduction does nothing if they are missing more then 10%.

Aka if its the first hit it damages them down to 90% hp then applies a short DoT but its worthless after the first hit.

Also do not confuse this with its raw damage counter part Blade of Calling which is its golden counter part.

Some folks in co-op keep that weapon around in case of invaders where it actually is useful. I just use black flame incantations for the DOT though.
I'll test it when I get home

The skill also does a pretty respectable amount of regular damage + lifts you into the air so ground-based attacks will miss, so it's pretty dang good even if you ignore the debuff entirely.
So I just tested it and yea the black knife ability takes away 10% of a bosses health permanently but only once. No wonder all those co-op summons use this at the start of a fight. So for 8 str, 12 dex and 18 faith (which can easily be reached by using the faith crystal tear) you have an attack thats a free 10% of boss health gone, I think it has to be the first 10% though.

Thats easily worth sacrificing a crystal tear spot in the physic.

The Weapon Art of the black knife does however do some persistent burning damage, enough to where it can easily be considered a primary weapon despite being a dagger.
Sheesh not for 25fp it doesnt
