I haven't played Mortal Shell, but if you didn't like the combat or the item menus from Dark Souls you most likely won't like Elden Ring
Well i owe Mortal Shell but the extreme clunkiness made me forget about it after less than one hour. It looks amazing but comes from a small stuidio WICH IS not bad since there is talent everywhere, not only in our main providers of triple A.
The control is pretty much the same in every Souls, so if thats a huge problem for you (i dont get it sorry) dont buy Elden Ring....but if you are willing to give a much superior game than Mortal Shell on every sense game a go....buy it.
The items system has a new thing called the "pouch" which lets you equip 4 items to the D-pad for easier use, it's really handy. I like putting the horse whistle and throwing knives there to be able to instantly pull them out when I need 'em.
The big new thing really is the open world, there's only a handful of major areas locked behind story progression and you can pick and choose what story bosses you want to kill freely (you need 2 out of 6 bosses to access the final area). The overworld is kinda segmented into smaller easier encounters with the classic souls levels being the story bosses' dungeons so you can mess around until you feel ready for the real dungeons, and if you get stuck you can go somewhere else.
If you enjoy just exploring and finding stuff you'll probably like ER.
Yeah man this one caught me with my guard down.....i just plain dont get it.
Of course have to give the OP the benefeit of doubt and take this thread seriously, even trying to help him but im just puzzled over here.....
I really dont like to label games as "clones" but without having a better word i will say Mortal Shell its just a Souls clone and not precisely one coming from a studio with nearly limitless resources.
I dont know...but the OP points directly to the fact he disliked Dark Souls 1 and 3 smells like a new player who probably interacted with them recently and have Mortal Shell as referent. If this is the case OP just give Elden Ring a go without trying to compare it with anything else. After all Elden Ring comes from the guys who invented the formula.....
If what they released as the game had been released as early access with the intent to craft a much bigger world, with more weapons, classes, enemies etc then I'd be interested to see where they could take it, but knowing I've seen all there is to it, yeah, dissapointing.
Mortal Shell is a Souls "like" and you basically said you prefer a "like" over the extremly succesful originals. No one can say a damn bad thing about that, your tastes are only yours and to each his own.
Instead hate you have two puzzled guys here (counting Sabaithal and me) because this is like the first time here and outside here someone actually says he prefers Mortal Shell over the original Soulbornes....again not a problem with that at all. Oh if someone comes around in a rude way trash talking the game you decide to read him or not, your eyes after all!.
Back to the main topic and question. Elden Ring is the natural evolution of a formula invented 13 years ago, combining a open world with the souls style and a overwhelming amount of options between weapon skills and spells to be whatever you want to be in Elden Ring. So of course we are talking about a better product that anything else so far, specially Mortal Shell....why? money thats why.
You have a 30% discount, biggest Steam community, GOTY, overwhelming positive reviews and a dude who played 1400 hours (moi) recomending it. Now is the perfect time to buy Elden Ring.
Mortal Shell is better
Actual ranking:
1- lords of the fallen
2- mortal shell
3- the surge
4- nioh
5- any souls clone
...
56- dark souls 2
57- dark souls 1 and 3
58- sekiro
59- elden ring
...
100- that 30 fps game with hunters
Bait
Just another bait
OP actually played 30 hours of Mortal Shell and even made a reasonable positive review. Still puzzled but dont think he is a baiter.
Oh and that ranking...was a good laugh. Thank you and now go ahead and buy Elden Ring....or Mortal Shell....just Elden Ring, you are going to love it!
And I nearly played all of the souls likes. I dont like most of them besides nioh 1,2 and the surge. The surge 2... because surge 1 wasnt that awesome that is needs a copy of itself.. I couldnt bring myself to play through.. same goes for lords of the fallen and the other low effort cash grab games. Lotf 2 looks quite nice tho. Have an eye on that.
Small indies think they can do what from does. Not even thinking about actual quality. Just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ games out without any love in detail. World building and boss design. Mortal Shell is one of these.. and they also took the epic games hostage money same goes for ashen which just is trash.
Some of the 2D souls clones are awesome tho. Hollow Knight, Blasphemous, Salt and Sanctuary. Just to name a few actual good games.
