I tested this a while ago with a friend of mine in Dark Souls 2. It took a while for him to show up in my world as a phantom, but it was him, build and all.
They should be able to see you, although I am a little clueless as to how this mechanic works in depth. Meaning when your phantom is shown in another players world etc.
That's less fun. I was hoping those were other players who were right there right now.
How could you tell it was a phantom of your character that you saw?
That's what I think as well.
I've definitely had situations where it seemed like a phantom could see me. A few times I've taken a swipe at a passing phantom, and they turned around and took a swipe at me. Or waving at a phantom and having it wave back. Could be coincidence though, because I also take random swipes while walking around just in the off chance that people think my phantom can see them. I also will repeat stupid actions to make a silly phantom, like spamming crouch while sprinting or attacking walls repeatedly in high traffic areas.
Also, loosely related, but if you open the menu explanation under help (or whichever option actually pauses the game), wait a bit, then unpause, you'll see a bunch of phantoms at the same time. Fun to do at the dueling arena.
