Whenever you are close to an object which can be intracted with a prompt will appear.
The same goes for multiple objects close to you.
A prompt will appear again, this time giving you not only the option to interact with an (usually prioritized) object, but to also switch to the next available one, usually indicated by arrows left and right of the prompt box iirc.
Also make sure that the lever in question can be used already. Sometimes you need to explore the area a little further to be able to interact with it.
