Even then it's better to just try and cheese him as he's one of the easier Hunters.
This.
And most of them are put in area that is so tiny (or full of obstacles) that it make the fight totally ridiculous.
In my opinion they are great. They are a bit scary, have excellent sounddesign and are hard hitting with fast leaping attack patterns like everything I imagine from a bear on steroids :D
Because at no point, fighting them is fun.
It doesn't matter if it's easy or difficult, if the fight end up being a chore more than anything.
Most of the solution needed to fight them correctly without requiring being overleveled and tanking like a brain dead NPC are either annoying or require to play / have a dedicated build specific for them.
They exist only to scale against people that use OP build/weapons, and thus, anyone that doesn't use those are forced to fight them like they are fighting the strongest boss of the game (cf, there is video of a rune bear against radagon, and guess what, the bear is as strong if not stronger in some situation).
In top of that, they are most of the times put in area that make them even more broken/cancerous to fight, aka, they can sometimes travel through wall/rocks and avoid collision detection, they can, if you succeed to tank with a shield, spam the same dash move set over and over again (more than 4 time back to back), and because most of the time they are in a close/tiny area, you have basically no time to "roll" or breath because of the Dash > 180° > Dash > 180° > Dash > 180° > Dash again and again.
Add into that the fact that their body is so large that you can still be dragged/hit even after successfully dodging them, and don't think that the tactic of sitting right in their crotch being good, since in a lot of time, they will be so close to a wall (again, thanks the dash spam to wall) that you won't even have the space to sit there.
Then, you add the high HP, the high damage, the 1 hit stagger (that can even 1 hit stagger Radagon) and you get a recipe for a disastrous mob:

Here is something inspirational (I know this guy is not normal haha), but still it shows impressively how you can move around the bear and fight him in a way that makes him pretty much helpless.

Basically trying to see how SA would fare solo against them, but the thing sometimes aggros to me. I refuse to damage it because that would mess with the test, so I only defend and evade. Do that for practice.
As I said, it's not about the difficulty, I know how to beat them (and no, I don't use a shield, I explained that different solution does not make the fight better, even "if" you were using a shield).
As for this video, first, it should be precised that this runbear version is quite easy, secondly, it's quite RNG based, in his fight, not a single time the bear decided to mass spam his dash move, when it does, it's annoying, since you are forced to wait.
Finally, like I said, the terrain is quite annoying, as seen in that video, where a lot of time, you can't even get on his side/back:

All in all, it's a mob that require you to fight him like a boss, while most big mobs (like troll etc...) doesn't force you to wait and circle around that much.
In the end, it's not interesting to fight them, in fact, I would largely prefer to replace all those bear by a tree sentinel lol, it would at least, provide a better fight.
I want Rune bear as a pet too. Shame on you for not helping your pet and letting it get killed lol.
OP, I do agree its rather obnoxious to encounter some of the game's more powerful trash mobs like Rune Bears, Revenants, etc. and get virtually no reward for them. It often comes off feeling really oddly placed.
Edit: oh someone beat me to it and posted a video of runebear wrecking ragadon lol
lol, the perfect pokemon.
Laughed like a maniac.....people pretending to be solid Snake getting mauled, half naked guys flying about like a plastic bag....explosion of dopamine.
lol
