He is a member of the Bloody Finger cult who is in service to Mohg Lord of Blood, which purpose is collect blood by murdering Tarnished to bring about the Mohgwyn Dynasty.

He is, however, notable among the Bloody Fingers in that he is the only member who doesn't immediately murder people on sight. He's polite (mostly), and tries to recruit new members.

He is evil however, and thinks the player is lower than himself.

It is also implied he is the person who killed your Maiden (the dead Finger Maiden in the area you start the game in). As well as killing his own Maiden.

you can't really agree or disagree on whether something that is heavily implied is true or not, that's not really how it works.

you can't really agree or disagree on whether something that is heavily implied is true or not, that's not really how it works.

Sure I can, I can disagree on whether the "implications" make sense or not as well as disagree about the fact its "heavily implied" when I don't think it is implied as killing your maiden before you get to the Hold doesn't benefit his plans, and the ritual to induct you into his blood cult typically involves you killing your own maiden.

People simply assume Varre is guilty because he's a bad guy that does bad things without stopping to consider what his motives are. Add to the mix the fact that Melina is a likable character that is incredibly helpful to the player and people don't want to question her .. incredibly convenient timing or how her goals are advanced by you being maidenless and needing her to fill the void.

I simply follow the motives of the three likely suspects and find Varre as not being the prime.

There isn't really 'good' or 'evil' in this game. Something that seems like a good action can have bad after effects and vice versa. We as the tarnished are far from good ourselves, We invade the land and basically start murdering everything we see as soon as we arrive.

Varre is no exception. He hunts tarnished, which is bad. BUT by hunting tarnished he's delaying the elden ring from being restored which is good. BUT he's in service to mohg which is bad. BUT he'd fighting back against the greater will which is 'good'. BUT he killed your finger maiden which is bad, BUT by doing this he tech severed the Tree's influence over your actions allowing the tarnished to think for themselves and eventually link up with melenia which is good.
