I think that's literally his canonical goal. The Shardbearers grabbed Great Runes, wanted more, and warred between one another for them and the right to become the next Elden Lord.* In that conflict, Radahn personally lead an assault on Lyndell and went after Godfrey as well; dude tried to kill his siblings and half-siblings for power.
*some exceptions; Rykard was trying to help Ranni and then snek happened, Ranni was trying to kick the Greater Will out, etc.
Sure we have. It's made very clear that Radahn was a good person and Malenia is vile.
what's made very clear is that Radahn was a good person to his troops. He was like a father to his men, cared deeply about them and his horse, etc. That's not a bad thing.
But he was a power-hungry would-be-monarch. He laid siege to Llyndell to claim the throne (and potentially Morgott's rune, if he knew of it) by force, and at some point tried to hunt down Godrick for his Great Rune.
Malenia's more or less the same. She was an instrument in her brother Miquella's plans, commanded near absolute loyalty from her knights, and was fighting for the oppressed and downtrodden they sheltered (albinaurics, misbegotten, etc). But at the same time she was fighting a war for power, tried to kill one or more of her siblings, and unintentionally or not caused massive ecological devastation to a large portion of the world.
Neither of them is purely good or purely vile.
Here is someone who actually gets it.
Its obvious it was for Miquella, which leads me to believe she intentionally went after Radahn who planned to take the Great Runes for himself, which would have included Miquella, so she decided to strike first.
Wouldn't be the first, or last, time she let her ego get to her head I suppose.
That event alone is why i think she wasnt interested in taking the Great Runes.
And we KNOW she's an egotist. Its subtle, but its hardly a shock, especially given her words upon first seeing the player (which if you know the lore you also know is blatantly false).
And like i said earlier, Radahn most likely planned to obtain the runes to take over the Lands Between for himself, which would have ultimately lead him to Miquella, which caused Malenia to antagonize him.
Also not really, the duel ended on a stalemate so Malenia and Radahn didnt lost in that regard, so her title as undefeated still holds true, could point out, that while prideful, she isnt a egomaniac, her dialogue when dying pretty much proves that.
