I suspect he isn't trying to be mocking at all. Dude belongs to a religious sect that actively spurns the Finger Maidens and may have even killed yours himself. Being maidenless by his worldview probably isn't a bad thing...he just sounds really, really condescending when he says it for no discernable reason lol.

Eh, not quite. While he's not required for anything important, he does have several unique rewards you can only get by doing his quest.

Rewards from Varre:
- Bloody Finger (one of the infinite invasion items).
- Blood Red Eyes (cosmetic only, overrides normal eye color).
- Varre's Weapon.
- Early access to an Endgame area (which also happens to be a very good Rune farming spot).
