Recusant Bernahl has returned to their world
It's an AI invader though, why would he do that? Is it cause I got too close to the ladder?

He only invades within a certain area. If you leave this area, he decides to leave. So yes.

I didn't even climb the ladder I was just backing up to switch weapons. Made me sad since he was at like 30% hp.

Being close to the ladders is already enough for him to leave, he only invades as long as you stay on the bridge I believe.
But he always reinvades upon reloading the area, so give it another try.
