THOPS BARRIER didnt drop

instead it was a somber 2 did i mess it up can i get this spell again?

Pre-Patch 1.03: Liurnia of the Lakes - Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab found on a small isle on the west side of the lake. The Rock West of the Dragon. This scarab now drops Somber Smithing Stone (2). [Elden Ring Map Link]
Post-Patch 1.03: Dropped by a Teardrop Scarab that spawns in the Church of Irith after Thops leaves for the academy. [Elden Ring Map Link]

Neither of these descriptions make any sense to me. I got barrier from his corpse pre 1.03, not a scarab.

You get ashes from the scarab

That's the Ashes of War version, there's also a Sorcery version: if memory serves after you give him the Glintstone Key you go to Ray Lucaria Classroom PoG (the one just inside the building from the giant water wheel), you exit towards the water wheel and turn right along the building and you'll find Thops sitting at a table dead w/ the Sorcery verision of Thops Barrier on him.

My bad, I was assuming op was looking for the ashes of war because of the somber drop he got instead.

Did you buy his whole inventory as well? Is only three spells, but if not I wonder if it is similar to Patches in, you need to meet X threshold behind the scenes for Y drop.

Out of curiosity, did you kill Thop? Cause if you kill him, you cant get the barrier. The only way to get the spell, and the ashes, is if you complete his quest.

no hes not dead what happened was i killed the beetle but it dropped a somber stone so I am still able to get the barrier ash for my shield? in the temple after i finish his quest only reason i ask is some videos i see people are getting the ash from that beetle but from the looks of it they changed it

What you need to do is finish Thops questline so he leaves for the academy and the scarab will spawn in/around the area where Thop sat previously before leaving.
