How does multiplayer work?

Can I play the whole game with a friend or is it only limited summons? Also is it the same broken system as DS with cheating invaders or is that fixed?
If you can play the whole game with a friend, will the friend also unlock achievements while playing even if they are not the host?

You can summon up to two friends which will not unlock progress or achievements in their world should you for example beat a boss or activate a site of grace.

As soon as you summon someone you will also enable other players to invade your world and cheating/glitch abusing is still a thing in Elden Ring, although not as severe as in other souls games.

There is a mod in the making which enables true coop (progress for all players etc.) and additionally blocks out invaders I believe though

It's the same as previous games. Only difference is that you're now only invadeable by default if you're playing co-op.

There is an upcoming "seamless co-op mod" under development that will give you the experience you're after. No invaders and no having to resummon after each bossfight or death. Just google it :)

Its the same limited summons thing from the other games.

However, there is a problem with how the game works with the Easy Anti Cheat, so you will pretty much get disconnected within 30 seconds every time you connect to anyone. Only about 1/10 times of being summoned directly at a boss door will your connection last for the whole boss fight.

If you intend to get this game to play with anyone, get it on a console, or don't get it at all. The online is so broken on PC that I can't believe its even legal to advertise the game as having it at all.

You can summon other players who will be scaled to your level and weapon upgrade.
During the period you have summons, you will be vulnerable to hostile players entering your world whose goal it is to stop your progress.
When the boss of an area is defeated, your summons will be sent back to their world and it will no longer be possible to summon in that area again until New Game+.
Any progress that’s made as a summon will not translate you your world, meaning if you and your friend want to get past the same boss, you’ll have to fight the boss twice.

Thank you for all the answers ^_^ I want to solo the game first, but I have a friend who wants to do co-op after, so maybe the mod will be an option.
