How to restore an overwritten sl2?
I was messing around with something I shouldn't and copied someone else's sl2 files over my own, including the backup (yes, I am stupid) and now when I start up the game I get "Failed to load save data" with the option to press ok to try again and end up in a loop. Does anyone know a way to get the original sl2 files back? I've tried the "restore previous version" method for undoing file overwrites but it says there are no recent versions. I also tried a system restore but it said something like an antivirus or something was preventing it from fully completing. If anyone knows how to fix this I would appreciate it. If not I will just have to gitgud.

Keep your own back-ups. You should ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS back up save files before doing anything with them.

Well, you seem to be out of luck unless you can restore from the cloud.

I tried looking into the cloud storage thing and it says it was last written on Mar 22, which should be safe, but it is still giving me the same error message.

Check nexus, if you have the actual save file I think there is a program that you can use to register a save file to use. I never used so I don't know how to use, try google nexus Elden Ring save register or something

Go here to download your cloud save, unless you overwrote that too

And always make regular backups

Well I got good news and bad news. I did manage to get the program to work, but like you said, I think the cloud saves got overwritten (even though the date on steam cloud says it is from several days ago). I appreciate everyone's help I will just start over and be careful from now on. The save was maybe like 30-40 hours gameplay so it's not tooooo brutal.

Look at it this way: what you've done will take less time now that you have more knowledge.

Yea I won't be fine-tooth combing everything up to where I left off like the first play through.

Never overwrite its delete first so if a mistake happens its in your bin to restore. As said keeping a save safe elsewhere is best option. I read someone used a nexus mod save to get one back.as theirs was corrupt.

Oh that this a nice link!! I'm going to add it to my corrupted save guide

But ya the only thing for the OP now is to either start over from nothing or unlock the shared save for his own use, which would be step #3 btw

It wasn't for the save it was for the char presets. But I didn't know what I was doing and did the last thing I wanted to do lol

When you get burnt enough you'll get better at backing up files.
