Boss spoilers, is Rykard supposed to be the most unfun boss in all of dark souls?

Is there cheese to this fight? The sword they give you does almost no damage, you have to be basically standing in the lava to even be close enough to hit him, his body takes up 85% of the area. Like, this has to be the worst designed boss I've ever seen in a dark souls game.

I figured upgrading wouldn't boost the cheese... my bad. Gonna try that.

be close enough and use the sword L2/LT in between his attacks. A couple of hits from this will stagger him for a moment allowing you to heal/run away, etc. But if he's getting ready to do a big attack he may not stagger. How's that vigor BTW haha, hopefully not running around with 500hp.

No, you're just suppose to pay attention to the vague arse story line hard enough to have heard the str based spear you get in the region is meant entirely as a special weapon just for him. Shoots wind beams based on attack choice in all forms. Use it, win.

the charge attacks shoot wind blades that do a lot of damage. But if you don't care for the spectacle (which I don't) then he's easily up there with Fire Giant as one of the most boring Fromsoft Bosses.

Bash him over the skull with the weapon art. Its range is insane just aim for his head. Use a summon that can take a beating for you like the mimic tear if you can :D

If you use the spear he is laughably easy

jump + weapon art did like 2.7K damage a hit for me at +4 and range is whole arena.....

With high enough poise, like 60+ I think, you can melee him without being staggered. He doesn't really know how to respond to that, he has like one move in each phase which he doesn't even use that often. He is a sack of potatoes with 70k health.

If any of you are interested in fighting him in the lava pool raw, it is possible to do ok damage, AND safely mitigate the proc damage from the environment.

It is not comfortable, fast, or as easily fun but absolutely effective.

The vague part about a spirit NPC sitting in his manor, in the main hallway where you cannot miss him, who states that he left his spear in there after dying and that it's the only thing which can defeat him? They couldn't have held your hand more with that if they wanted to.

You don't need to upgrade.

Just use the Weapon Art of the spear lying on the ground when you walk in. You can literally stunlock the boss from 100% to 0% using it.
