Volcano Manor, though, are just jerks. It's pretty much part of the code, Bernahl will flat out tell you upfront.
Edit: There are people who don't attack on sight, though! A lot of the bog standard unarmed commoners will do nothing but run away or cower, but most people cut them down before it's really noticeable.
I mean there is also guidance of grace or what not, but 99% of what tarnished are doing is murdering robbing and looting.
Those who do not attack tarnished just do not want to die immediately the bloodthirsty bastard.
Considering that Marika as godqueen is/was the most beloved person, it would make sense that npcs at least react to you in some way, and most of them seem to be hostile towards the player.
Decorate yourself in all the sweet loot you find so everyone knows you stole from their homeland.
See random graveyards with open caskets, decide to steal all the runes from the dead.
Find the last city that has something that resembles order. Kick the teeth of the door bouncer and walk in there. Start murdering ♥♥♥♥ with the intend to go to their most holy site the Erdtree. When you get cucked by the Erdtree you decide to be a giga chad and just burn it all down.
Walz into the forbidden lands, killing everything in your path. Commit genocide on the race of the giants and kill the last living giant. Sacrifice your maiden to spark some fancy fire and set the tree ablaze. Whole capital city is only rubbles and ash now.
Become Ultra giga chad by killing their beloved God and take the throne.
Bonus points if you join the tree fingers and decide to not only burn the Erdtree but also set the whole world aflame or spread the loathsome dung eaters poop curse and damn entire generations to unending suffering.
And all of that would work much better if the environment was a somewhat 'functioning society' to some degree.
I remember being so disappointed when first playing through and everybody was like: "the capital" or "volcano manor" implying there would be a civilized part of the world that still functions where people go about their business and it's just the ruined world below that is utterly degenerate.
No.. both volcano manor and lyendell are full of degenerate zombie monsters...
I believe the world design did not succeed as well as it could with 'just enemies' in it.
The quest characters feel very much out of place, because none of them are 'seekers' or 'combatants' like you. They ostensibly are characters 'living' in a world that ... has nothing but copy-pasted ruins and degenerate undead in it...
I personally wont mind, at some point, get from Miyakaki game with a lot of interactive NPC, dialogues and cutscenes. In the vein of the Witcher, for example, just to experience how his story would look and feel in that kind of style. But it seems like he and dev team just doesnt want to do it. And its okay.
