What did I lose out on by killing him? Was trying to retreat to where I had some light and killed him when swinging at one of the enemies.

He would have altered your armor for free if you followed his questline. Now every alteration will cost you 500 runes per piece, but only if you found the tailoring tools.

You can give him the sewing needles to mainly remove capes from armor for fashion purposes. You can just do that by yourself though at a very very small cost. So you don't really miss out on anything with him. afaik.

You don't lose out on anything with his "benefits" One of the more boring quest line to be honest.

Oh good, something that is not a major loss, since 500 ruins, even at the start, is not hard to come by (can go and do the boulder farm a couple of times and just pay the cost with ruins to spare)

You can also try to see if you can use a celestial dew at the church of vows and get absolved of your sin, ya murderer!
Some NPC can't be brought back to life tho but I don't think Boc should be a problem.
