Flames of the Redmanes has an advantage against Malenia's second phase: in this phase, some of her combos are extended. For instance, she might do a long-distance thrust, and extend that to an upward leap then downward stomp. I can trigger Flames after I avoid the thrust, with the Flames' range and tracking still ensuring she is hit, and again after she slams down. These done in quick succession significantly increases the likelihood of her getting stance-broken.
The only other weapon I thought of switching to is the Flamberge, because of its inherent bleed. I would however give up the extra 10 crit, and I'm not sure if it's worth it.
Weapon? I must say, and this surprised me, the Black Bow. It feels so satisfying to use and interrupt/pick at the mage or passive players in an invasion, and with the ludicrous sprint shot tracking on startup and the great varieties of shot speed you can do, it's not terrible as a weapon. You'd be surprised how many people will just sprint at you and then take arrow after arrow as you roll -> shoot indefinitely.
Cross naginata with spectral spear occult is wonderful on dragon communication build. The range is long, the rof is high, low FP cost, can use a shield and the wa can bleed, just lv up arcane can make high AR even as a caster.
Such a badass move
This is mostly for my pure intelligence character. I often don't have anything besides a stave equipped in my mainhand, but when I do use weapons I use...
-Glintblade phalanx. Using this makes it so I don't have to have this kind of spell memorized. ANd it's easier to use because I can recast it without cycling my spells. Mostly nice for PvP, but the enormous stagger damage it does makes it nice for PvE too.
-Moonveil Katana. Surprise! It's good, why wouldn't I use it? It's honestly hard playing a caster in PvP because cycling spells is impossible if you're being pressured, at least for me. So this kind of option is nice to fall back on.
-Wing of Astel. Mostly nice for PvE. L2 does a lot of damage to large bosses and staggers them.
-Carian regal scepter L2. Mostly just a fun meme.
-Carian retaliation. I've been learning how to parry.
-Glintstone pebble. It honestly feels bad if you hit someone with this using an optimized build, so I just have it on Lazuli's glintstone sword.
-Ice spear. Just kind of OP in PvE. Still fun though.
-Hoarfrost stomp. Nice and fun when you're going for a frost type build, because frost spells other than Adula's are lacking.
Utility stuff I use depending on the situation or boss. Endure for poise casting, BHS, assassin's gambit.
Since patch 1.04 I noticed Gravitas was buffed, so I might experiment to see if I can find any combos with it. Chilling mist was also buffed, so maybe it'll be another option for frost sorcerer builds. Might also have to play around with Bastard stars to see if it's something I want to use in place of the Wing of Astel occasionally.
Btw. If I wanted to pick my favorite ash of war just based on how cool it looks, it'd definitely Eochaid's Dancing Blade. It was even buffed in 1.04. Sadly it's just not something I can use with an intelligence build.
Also like Flame blade, since it does a ton of regular and stagger damage. Also fire weapons are always needed for something in FROM software games.
For anti-cavalry spears, Giant hunt is a good choice. It functions almost the same as impaling thrust, but aims upwards often damaging both the rider and the mount.
And for non-ashes weapon art, the one on Silurias spear is one of my favorite. Never gets old blasting something in the face, or off the side of a cliff, using it. Seriously, it will even knock omens on their ass.
Right now it's just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blast as I'm going through areas I missed. Clears out a dozen enemies at once with minimal effort. And it feels cool as ♥♥♥♥.
If you don't mind my asking, what did you find it effective for, if anything? I was thinking of making a PvP mage knight, and wanted to know if it would be good to put on a Partizan as a close-range "get off me!" option so I could drop Slicer for something else.
My favourite non meta weapon is probably Hand of Malenia but it's weapon art is lackluster against most bosses and I only play PvE. Not sure about other ashes of war, I usually swap between all of them but none of it really convinces me as much as bloodhound step. I stuff like glintstone phalanx, seppuku, chill mist for my offhand usually.
Tbf, I don't use it much for PvP. But if you get someone with it, they'll die. It's a meme because it's not that easy. And Carian slicer is honestly the best "get off me!" a mage can use. Slicer>piercer combo roll catches people that roll away from slicer. I think slicer>comet combo can too.
If you do use a spear on an intelligence build, I think Naginata is still the best. But going by stat requirements Clayman's harpoon fits with intelligence builds that have less strength. Sword dance is really good if you're using scholars armament. But I don't really like scholar's armament, and without it magic or cold ashes of war are probably better.
