PSA about save files. * Please Read *
Idk who needs to here this but for the love of god. DISABLE CLOUD SAVING.
Your save file is located here:
C:\Users\* your user name here *\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing
Open the only folder and make a back up ( because bad people love to hack and screw things up for the rest of us )

Thank you, This has been a PSA from the FromSoft fan base.

Yup
Had cloud saves ♥♥♥♥ up games years ago
Just disable that ish, not your work documents, most people aren’t jet setting and playing games so don’t need a digital back up xD

Why?
Senpai so Ecchi Apr 4, 2022 @ 1:41pm
you can still backup your savefiles even with cloud save on though?
why disable it?

having your cloud save enabled or disabled is irrelevant

because steam cloud is a piece of crap that's notorious for botching people's saves, no matter what game it is.

the usual issue is that there's a network hiccup (whether that's on steam's end, or the client's end) and it will get confused about the save on your local hard drive vs what's on the cloud, slingshotting the cloud save over your further local save.

it's also been responsible for save corruption too, but only in a few niche cases and i don't fully understand what the cause there is. haven't looked into elden ring specific save corruption having steam cloud as a culprit so i won't comment about that. i have seen it happen for other games though.

i always, ALWAYS, disable steam cloud because i don't want to deal with its nonsense.

dunno why people are hating on the cloud tho, dont see the issue.

never had problems on my end and if something goes wrong in elden it tells you just that, as well as giving you the option to choose between loading the cloud save or the one on your harddrive, along with time stamps

Thanks, is there a way to disable it globally?

on the top left of the steam client

steam > settings > cloud

disable "enable steam cloud sync for apps that support it"

maybe it's just me, but this setting is unreliable. i've had this disabled and by default, elden ring still forced the steam cloud on me and i had to manually disable it even though i supposedly already had steam cloud globally disabled.

I mean unless you're completely inept, Steam tells you your ♥♥♥♥'s not matching up with the save stored on the cloud, if you choose to load the cloud save, that's on you, always pick the latest out of the two.

As for backups, yes always do it just in case. The game automatically makes one for you too.

Until one day your 500 hour save file is suddenly gone. The point being it can potentially happen, and its better to be safe than sorry. Its not like the saves take up 5gb of space or anything, unless its X4.

to add

please use

elden ring auto backup

https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/144

and you shouldn't need to kill cloud saves

also please tell From to code server's like a server-client connection that you're used to, right now all multiplayer is peer to peer which can never be secure

keyword is "dedicated servers"

Dedicated Server or P2P?
There are advantages to both, but it can be simply boiled down to resources and ease of implementation. P2P is cheaper and easier. It’s a combination of budget and easy implementation. But it often performs worse in terms of stability and connectivity. And a dedicated server requires upkeep or payment to maintain via a provider. This cost results in a more stable network.

Our reason for bringing up this topic is due to a lack of awareness regarding the security of P2P. While it is a benefit to money and time, it reveals a swathe of security issues.

The main issue is that there is no neutral authority to verify and authenticate player action. With one or several players acting as a hybrid server/client authority, it adds a layer of complexity. A layer where hackers and cheaters can happily sit inside. In this situation, you’re relying on the goodwill of your players and, as we all know, there will always be those looking to target the gaming industry.

yeah it was hilarious in the months leading up to release when there were people who were really obsessed with this game having cloud save to protect themselves against hackers or corrupted files :X

Anywho, here's a guide for backing up stuff

You can have cloud saving on and still backup your files. With cloud saving on your game saves both to the cloud AND locally. You don't have to choose one or the other. I don't think there's any good reason to disable cloud saving.
