Borrealis's scream is, as far as I have been able to determine, unavoidable damage if you are fighting him by standing at his head for some builds. You can block it, and rolling can mitigate the damage, but you're eating at least three ticks and suffering frost buildup.
And I mean, that isn't inherently bad; attacks that are blatantly unfair can be a decent way to indicate to players that they're standing in the wrong place or approaching a fight wrong. But the most efficient and consistent way of killing every flying-dragon model enemy before Borealis was to stand at the head because it made for stronger poisebreak punishes and allowed you to benefit from the weakspot damage on the snout. Additionally, Borealis still has the same weakspot and openings as they did, but his roar is heavily punishing if you try to fight him in that way.
It feels contradictory to what seems the intended way to approach the fight, and reminds me a lot of the Ancient Dragon model enemies to some extent in that regard.
There's multiple screams; the problematic one can be seen in this video at 0:50. It deals damage at 0:51
After having a look using Youtube's ability to go frame-by-frame, it's 77 frames from the first frame of this attack's animation to the frame damage is dealt.
Quite a bit of that time, however, is me counting from when he first starts to twitch his head upwards. Because dragons wiggle their heads all over the place just by moving around, I think it's fair to talk about reacting to this attack from the first point that it's realistically possible to tell that it is indeed an attack and not just him moving or wigging out on terrain. I would arbitrarily put that point on frame 12, where Borealis has raised his head to above spine level.
So, if you accept my argument that it isn't realistic to expect the players to notice the first bunch of frames that are just a very minor head raise, you would have 65 frames, or 1.083 seconds, to react
That's too fast for Torrent, as we can see from watching this video. At 3:44:29 the Torrent moving mount animation starts. 123ish frames later, Torrent has fully materialized and begins to gallop. You're not getting on the horse fast enough to move away.
With an average reaction time of above 16.5 frames at 60 FPS (data was collected with a much more forgiving scenario where you're doing nothing actively and just watching for one thing that you need to respond to, so this is unreasonably low for the scenario at hand. In my experience, PKCS hits in DS3's PvP were 22 frames and hovered on the edge of what people could consistently react to), you can roll about 2 times before you're getting hit (assuming ER midroll = DS3 midroll, with 13 iframes and 10 recovery). In my experience, even if you react this quickly, two rolls do not take you far enough to remove you from the AoE of the roar.
TLDR: it's unreactable if you're standing at his head unless you can block. I don't know about if you're ankle chipping; that might have you far enough back that two rolls will take you to safety.
Minor nitpick, but Borealis is a field boss, not a miniboss. He has a boss healthbar and victory text appears after you kill him.
Exactly my problem
Ah that one, I never had issues with that attack cause i sit under the neck of any dragon and slap the head around, the instant i heard the roar sound start i rolled backwards to his tail. The one I was refering to is the one where he charges up and does the big aoe around him that wasent showcased in that particular vid.
Huh; I always stood in front because I find it hard to wrestle the camera and see what they're doing if I'm under the neck (plus the stomps are more threatening).
If that's the intended way to go about it, I think they probably should have made it more clear.
In my particular case I dont lock on to some of the larger enemies until I go to swing to insure the hit depending what weapon I'm using, even in previous games its just easier to manage the camera myself. Its a trick I learned from Monster Hunter, just makes life easier to not rely on the lockon 100% of the time.
Sorry you cant just face mash without any care into bosses, maybe you shouldn't be playing souls games if actually trying isnt your thing.
Easy kill on any of those standard dragons.
I feel like that when I was getting the hang of this battle, the key to my success was that this never happened. But I was always on Torrent (the head raise is actually pretty noticeable after you see it a few times). Torrent can also help tank the damage. But more importantly, I'm not attacking on foot, while the dragon is neutral as in the clip (because the player would be inviting themselves to the attack). All of that was asking for trouble bc at the time (with my vigor), I'm pretty sure that breath was a one hit kill (from a single wave) for me if I wasn't blocking.
