Help me understand 'Parry'
So I got a small shield with the skill 'Parry' on it, but you can parry with a shield with no skill. What's the difference?

Also, if my shield has a skill other than parry, I can no longer parry as that key uses the skill on the shield like 'Barricade' or 'Shield Bash'. They take away the ability to parry if your shield has a skill then?

Parry is basically a stun that requires good timing

You can't parry with no skill, no skill means L2/LT uses the skill of your right hand weapon.

You're probably mixing Guard Counter with Parry. Anything you can block with can be followed up with a guard counter, but only shields and certain small weapons with the Parry Ash of War can be used to parry.

Parry and blocking are two different things. Blocking is holding your shield up, and parrying is hitting enemy's weapon with your small shield just before enemy hits you.. You can block with any shield or when wielding weapon two handed.

Right, but if a shield has a skill other than 'Parry' on it you can not parry with it, correct?

Correct

Interesting Never played a 'souls' game so it's all new to me.

I might just commit to a skill and blocking rather than parrying then.

In most cases you will either want parry or "no skill" so you can use the skill of your weapon while wielding the shield.

Barricade shield used to be good but after the patch it's pretty bad.

LOL! Even when getting things explained to me in this game I still don't understand half of it.

Give me an example of how your shield, with no skill, might use the skill of your weapon.

L2 uses the skill of your left hand equip, unless its no skill, then it uses the right hand equip skill

a shield with No Skill means it will use your right hand weapon's skill instead.
This will allow to you keep blocking attacks without having to switch or 2hand in order to use your weapon's weapon arts.

Greatshields NEVER COULD PARRY. Not in any Fromsoft game.

You can't parry with no skill, parry is one of the skills.
