So, Silver Skulls

You know the ones. The glowing skulls that drop a Gold Rune [1] when you smash them.. is there any rhyme or reason for them to appear that anyone has discovered? Are they related to other players dropping items or losing their runes? Or do they just randomly appear, even when off-line.

Roll over them, hit them with a weapon, or jump near them, or just run them over with Torrent for a Gold Rune [1] worth 200 runes. I've smashed a few full stacks for ~20K Runes (200*99). It is a decent way to star your reserves when you lose 70K runes due to a stupid death.
