Upgrade your weapon more or use a better weapon. I have a +6 gold halberd on a glass cannon str + faith build and almost everything there dies in 1-3 hits. Even the big dudes.

Yeah Caelid is definitely a difficulty spike. Recommend avoiding the overworld giant animals. They hit hard, have awkward patterns, and aren't that rewarding to fight.

Level up. The game uses a defense calculation that makes it so if enemies have way higher attack than you have defense you will take lots of extra damage. Everything in the game is based around levels. At your level, the red Crucible Knights would take half my health in one swing. I leveled another 20 or so times and then they'd only chip my health and I could face tank them for multiple hits. Same with Caelid, you're expecting to do it way before you should be there. You can challenge yourself but your damage and defense will suffer and fights will be long and deadly. Could always continue exploring and come back to it another time to continue that main quest. There's really no reason or need to be in Caelid before level 60+.

Caelid is extremely dangerous. it's kinda equivalent to DS New Londo in being an area available early that's almost certain to kick your ass extremely hard if you aren't properly prepared

I didn't see any difficulty spike from Caelid at all because I explored fully the previous zones. They take and deal damage like any other enemy to me. Dragonmaw was a difficulty spike so I am staying away from it till after I finish the plateau. By the time I return to it after fully exploring the capital, I'll probably be over level 100 and easily murdering everything.

It's not about character levels, its purely on the equipment you have and what weapon use with your stats (the minimum requirement to use the weapons).

^ I'd like to add on to kyutaru here and reinforce that you are there pretty early. I'm not saying you can't do it if you're skilled enough, but if you're playing casually then there is a lot of places you can go get runes and level up more before going to Caelid.

Also, armor itself does very little for your character. Your main defense does come from levels (like Kyutaru said). If you find you're taking too much damage, then usually that's a sign of being too low of level.

The game gives you the route for the story line quests, but you're also kind of expected to explore on your own a bit too. There's a big world out there with lots of XP in it. On my second playthrough I was level 97 before I stepped foot into Caelid.

No, it's about character levels. Every level you gain a point in all your defensive stats. I've been using the same equipment I started the game with, never bothered to change armor. Yet I can still tank mobs that used to one shot me purely because my Defense values keep climbing with each level. The damage formula for the game compares your defense to the enemy's attack value and if the discrepancy is too great then expect to take massive damage. Just by following the appropriate progression path I've been smooth sailing and if something seems like a difficulty spike it's usually because I shouldn't be there at that level.

Caelid is like +15 weapon area imo. Decent stuff to explore, some caves are decent, but general area will be rough while your damage and health is low.

I think it's due to the playstyles, I rarely depend upon tanking enemies and getting damage to HP is a rare occasions on my end.

Learning enemy moves
Shield
Dodge
Distance
Weapon Arts
Wondrous flask tear to negate one hit

Everything contributes to me avoiding getting damage to HP in the first place.

Not really about playstyles either, I play the same way you do. I learn the enemy moves, I use a shield + katana, I HAVE to dodge and control my distance, and I'm faith so I abuse my arts to buff.

It's simply that in order to even level up your weapon you require smithing stones. Strength and Dexterity do very little for improving the damage, the bulk of it will come from upgrades. But to get smithing stones you have to explore -- A LOT -- and that will naturally mean you gain runes and defeat bosses and find upgrades and talismans and memory slots etc. I've been doing my best to clear the zones fully, at least whatever I notice, and that has resulted in levels and higher weapon refinement. So I'm running around with a +19 katana and defenses over 100 purely because I followed the progression.

Trying to do it at 45 with a +8 is like setting the difficulty to Very Hard regardless of playstyle.
