How good are pyromancies this time around?
Was debating if I wanted to go all out in them. I know sorceries and magic sucks at the start but scales better then becomes OP as you have higher Int + better tools for it. How is it for pyromancies though?

Pyromancy as a spell class is gone, it's been primarily integrated with miracles in the form of a new spell class: Incantations. Basically, pyro is now miracle.

Huh ...

Idk why they did that, but how good are they now then?

pyromancies seem fine to me so far in elden ring, just remember you can charge them up by holding the button down.

i'm only just now getting my foot in the door with pyromancies though. it might be like sorceries where only a couple spells are viable with the rest being complete garbage.

my guess as to why they're lumping pyromancies into incantations now is, previously, literally anybody could dabble into pyromancy no matter what playstyle they were.

pyromancies used to only scale off the pyromancy flame using to cast it, stats didn't matter much if at all. guess they wanted that off the table here.

Dunno unleveled the basic fireball does about 130 to 190 damage depending on resistance. FP is very tight though and needs a lot of investment if magic in general is your weapon of choice
Bit of spoilers for a couple spells but, there appears to be a new pyromancy family called black flame. Does damage like a normal pyromancy but after it applies a dot on the target for about 2 seconds that drains (based on max??) hp. Been loving that on my sword and its amazing bonus damage with higher faith scaling

Magic is the most powerful build early on dude.

Just pebble for days against anything that isnt an NPC and occasionally dodge.

Mechanically it's new, but visually we've had black fire in DS1 and DS3. And yes, the afterburn is based on max HP.

As a heads up, there are dragon type spells that need some arcane on the side. While there are several, mostly you hear people whining the dragon head spell that spits rot is "OP made the boss I literally could not beat for two days too EZ"

As for the low end, even if you never scale up your faith past 15 the usual true utility of pyromancy even for low investment cavemen is "Have some element damage on demand."

Plus, you know. the faith pyromancy that cures the new toxic clone, rot. For "Poison swamp areas, the revenge, the reckoning"

More so now that you make a huge stockpile firebombs. as thrown pots work like zelda bottles now (and you can't craft in the middle of combat). so depending on how you play it can take a while to break double didgits on any thrown pot item. (also I think the game removes pots for sale at some vendors if you take the 3 empty pots gift. I'm seeing merchants I never met before already sold out of them)

"Oh look, another walkway full of explosive barrels with birds carrying explosive barrels. I will throw a firebomb-oh right I forgot to craft more... eh, I'll throw a minimum power tiny fireball instead"

It's weird because sorceries get like I think 3 fire spells? They rolled fire into faith so now faith gets holy, lightning, fire, and support.. so Faith by far has the most utility and by using pyromancies you'd also be able to use other faith stuff.

Aside from the 3 fire sorceries, everything sorcerers get is magic damage.. Cold is just magic element with frostbite build-up. Fire, lightning, and holy are all actual damage types though.. it's hilarious because faith has always been bad in Souls but now it's by far the best. The sheer utility you'd get from it is worth it for any build really.

I think they took the idea of pyromancies fitting just about any build in the other games and just made faith that way instead so they just rolled pyromancies into faith. What I'm curious about is if you could do an actual like faith-based build and do decent enough damage with the incantations.. from what I've heard offensive incantations are more for like area denial typically.

Damage incantations have pretty bad FP costs, over double what early sorceries cost while doing less damage at a shorter range.

So while they're effective you can't really use them as your main source of damage at least early to mid game.
