Since From wanted a story line for the game they decided to not name it Dark Souls 4 because it would leave people confused on how this worlds lore ties into the Dark Souls worlds. They are however completely separate worlds so the name change allows people to look at and learn about this games lore freely with out thinking about Dark Souls.
TLDR Basically dark souls has a lot of lore baggage and they wanted a fresh start on a new world and lore with this game so named it differently.
because its not dark souls 4
I agree with you, but I wonder if they ever going to go back to a more "linear" level design. Not that I dislike this one, on the contrary.
time for joy! mate
Tarnished =/= Chosen Undead
Elden Lords =/= Lords of Cinder
Runes =/= Souls
Grace =/= Bonfires
Don't get me wrong, this is the best game I've played in years. But let's not pretend it isn't basically Dark Souls 4. From/Miyazaki definitely have a preference for certain themes and they re use them again and again. Elden Ring is great, but thematically it's entirely a From game, which is to say it's derivative of what they've done before. Which I am absolutely fine with, btw.
It's more than just Dark Souls 4. It's like the realization of everything that has been in the works since the very beginning with Demon's Souls. Just look at the concept art. I've seen places that are dead up actual realization of concept art.
I'm not even a long running DS fan but I would have assumed most people looking into this game would have assumed it's basically going to be "open world dark souls". I think the old saying "If it's not broke don't fix it" applies here, they have a fantastic set of game mechanics and had like 5 games now to put them to use and take the best (ideally) out of them and combine all they've learned and achieved into this new product - Elden Ring.
