Disable auto-centering camera should be #1 priority.
Even before performance fix.

The auto-centering camera needs a disable option.

I've seen it the first minute I launched the game.
I'm pretty sure that, though most people can't put their finger on it, it's the main reason KB/M players find it unplayable.

Even with a controller it's annoying as hell when you like to wander peacefully between areas and look around, so I can't imagine what a game deciding where you should look must be like when playing with a mouse.

This was fine for DS3, but it's not acceptable for an open world game, especially one with such great vistas and so much stuff to find. We need to be able to look where we want.

For those who don't understand what I'm talking about, or think there's a way to avoid this, there isn't, and I'm talking about the fact that the camera rotates on its own to face forward as soon as you move and fights you when you try to turn it on your left or right while on the move.

EDIT: There is an unofficial solution to this mentionned in the post marked as answer, right below.
Doesn't solve everything, though, your camera will not move when you move your character, but your character will still turn when you turn the camera.

!! Do not use online !!

EDIT2: I've been a bit unfair to this FromSoft it seems.

I had a few minutes in front of me, so I fired up the PS5, to try Ghost of Tsushima.
I could swear this didn't happen in it or most other 3rd person games, but the camera behaves the same.

So really, it's just that camera controls in videogames are outdated, and Elden Ring is the one game that made me realize this.

I feel like most gamers today would know how to handle a camera that's completely independent from the player's movements and vice versa, but we're stuck with this in every game.

It's particularely painful in ER, especially when you get duo bosses, you need to get both in your field of view at all times while being able to freely move around the combat area, but it's next to impossible to do it constantly with a camera that follows your movements and movements that follow your camera.

Still, this needs to change, and the fact that all games do this doesn't change the fact that it's outdated, quite the opposite even.

For Special K users it can also be loaded as a plugin (so the separate mod loader does not need to be used) -- just add the following snippet of code to the bottom of SpecialK.ini:

Agreed. Hopefully some of the devs see this. Please add toggle in the options for camera auto centering when moving. It’s really painful to play without this disabled currently as I can’t effortlessly look to the side when traversing open world as camera seem to roll back to the centre on it’s own as soon as I let log the right thumb stick (yes i play on the controller) It’s even worse when on horse as camera seems to auto rotate faster in this case.

Sekiro was the same way. Thankfully there was a mod that fixed it and also uncapped the framerate. I think the bros on github are currently working on something incredibly similar to the mod for sekiro.

Wouldn't say it should take priority over performance patches for people struggling to play, but I would love to see a slider for how intense the game's recenter camera is, similar to RDR2. It's at its worst when riding, in my opinion, since you can't really focus on groups or moving around a locked on enemy effectively.

The other thing I'd love to see is the ability to disable R3 to recenter the camera -- both because it's currently unnecessary due to the above issue and because it makes it really hard to get a lock-on sometimes when your camera keeps trying to swing behind you instead of locking on, which makes you have to point your camera at the enemy again and sometimes that just results in the camera getting recentered when you click R3. Very frustrating for some enemies which seem to intentionally break lockon and go offscreen.

A super ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ huge agree with you, this is a ♥♥♥♥♥ feature since DS, at least let the players decide to turn it on or not, this is just a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ simple things that could done by the devs, isn't it?

same camera that every souls game has, the ♥♥♥♥ are you on about?
Yeah, so you could know how long these devs have messed up the camera. You think you're okay not means others as well, how selfish.

You should be talking about the "Lock on" function that enemies also have. When you evade or try to atack the enemie, the camera rotate auto in favout of the enemie to not miss the atack landed on your character. Its ridiculous in my opinion, this function is also present on old souls games too, but it need to go. Why we have evasion movement if the camera will help the boss spining him on your directon to assist the boss to not fail the atack when he miss? If the boss miss the atack he need to be punished not helped by an auto cam spining him on your direction for him not to miss.

You seriously might be blind lol. The camera centring is GLARINGLY obvious and attention grabbing with mouse control. Its like a toddler is trying to randomly move the mouse around as you play. On controller the camera movement is far slower than mouse anyhow, but its still so obviously that I cant understand if you're really being honest about not noticing.

Maxing camera speed helps a bit but yes it's bad.
Coin Feb 27, 2022 @ 6:38pm
Usually i hate that, but here i don't feel it at all. I had to check if it was even a thing, it is, but i didn't notice it.

I also don't understand when it matters. Not in a fight, clearly, if use lock on.

Do you realize why we have this problem in nowadays games? Because of these f*cking consoles and their controllers. This ♥♥♥♥♥♥ design can't get anything done and needs helpers like aim assist and camera assist like that.

F*ck consoles. This shouldn't be a thing. They break the industry.

You know a lot of PC players (myself included) use controllers on action games like this, right? And that PC controllers have been around for video games since more or less the beginning? It's generally more intuitive for most players than M+KB for stuff like this, DMC, Nioh, etc.

The blame lies with the devs for not making it configurable, as many games do. Consoles are just PCs that require less troubleshooting, especially nowadays.

oh my, I'm missing the DS2 movement so much(except the Sekiro-type jumping)

In the end, I learned to play unlocked in order to be able to move around freely, while I can still keep my eye on my opponents.

But in Elden Ring characters are turning in the direction of the camera view automatically. This means that when I face large group of enemies and I have to retreat for a bit, I must turn around, spam roll a few times (because I cant reaction roll, I dont see my opponents) then run and hope for the best.
Its even more annoying on horseback
frisch Feb 28, 2022 @ 12:16am
Yes please but two separate settings for vertical and horizontal camera auto pan. I like auto center if it's not too fast panning but only for horizontal view, having to move the camera so I can look to the ground or in the air over and over again is just annoying.
Sokurah Feb 28, 2022 @ 12:18am
I dont agree. Free camera doesnt fit the lockon combat where you "aim" for your opponent and wanna have him in front if you.

I could not play the game without it on kb+m.

Its fine for games like shadow if war. But not for this one.

If you wanna admire thw landscape just stand still for a moment 😁

But a setting would not hurt.
auto centering and target switching on mouse move both have to die a violent death. these two features are the main hindrances when it comes to control.

fighting a mob? better not move that mouse or you'll switch target to a deer or a goat.
running in a direction but want to look to your sides, or god forbid, whats chasing you from behind? hell no, you will see what the camera dictates you should see and not a pixel more. if you want to look behind you while running a particular direction you WILL use the S key you ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ peon. oh you ran over a cliff? lol git gud.

EDIT: also, when you target lock something and charge into it on horseback with the intent to hit and keep running in that same direction you quickly have to switch from W to S in order to keep moving in that direction as the camera flips around once you pass the mob, which means forwards becomes backwards and vice versa. incredibly bothersome to say the least.

@jagg

Its no problem when you manually lock on / off with a key close to your movement key.

I have it on my pinky. Works like a charm.
