Strength build the best way to handicap yourself?
Been playing as a strength char for my first play through, feels like im much weaker than i should be, other classes/play style (magic especially) are keeping up with me if not doing more than me at lower Sl's. Anyone else feeling like strength is a harder way to play?

Sure, magic might be strong, but if any enemy closes the distance, you're dead instantly.

Currently using the Greatsword and before that was using the Zwiehander. Sounds like a serious skill issue.

wait till you fight bosses like malenia that life leeches, aoes, and has aoe that attacks that can one shot you. anyone who says melee is fine has either never played a magic/faith build or super early in the game.

Dex build here but I'm going to be quality soon, I guess. I feel like melee in general is pretty limited in this game. The first main boss (I mean the story boss) is really a pain in the butt when you have to face it in close range.

First story boss (assuming you mean Margit) is quite easy if you just spam charged strong attacks on him. He gets stunned very easily so you can riposte/crit him
I am playing Hybrid Faith/Melee build with a FAITH scaling weapon.

Melee is still my main damage dealer because it doesn't use FP, and with a NO SKILL shield it's pretty great.

Spells get punished by a lot of bosses with closing attacjs. The spammable spells all have garbage damage. Some enemies are outright immune to fire and others don't take much from lightning

I honestly don't see why people see melee as so bad. Melee needs to be augmented to be really good, but that's true with every souls game, and in this one you can easily craft grease, so it's not a big deal anyway.
If Melee is as garbage as people say it is, I'm really glad I'm using it.

Breezing through every boss in 1-2 tries, I can't imagine how easy this game would be with magic.
Not sure, but quality is definitely trash. I currently have 20 str and 20 dex, but swapping my weapon to quality will actually make it do LESS damage.

Very much doubt I'll have to much trouble on it. These people complaining about melee are almost certain impatient people who just want to attack attack attack and not wait and look for openings. They are there, had an argument the other day about the first major boss on how he had "no openings" and this sounds like the same exact rhetoric.
I went is assuming melee was hard mode, as it arguably has been in every game in this style From has made. Right now Im rocking a quality build duel wielding great swords and that is likely what Im sticking with for this play through. Group encounters suck, but bosses and solo encounters are so much more satisfying to go close range with. figuring out how to beat the god skinned apostle with melee was amazing. Melee gives you problems to solve, magic solves your problems. I dont play from soft games to have things handed to me so I think melee is more fulfilling over all.

That being said, mages were the weakest they have ever been in DS3, melee is the most challanging its ever been in Elden ring. Its revenge of the mages.

I think it only comes online late game, might still be trash but in DS3 you wanted 40/40 to get the most out of a quality build.

Edit: I can really feel the difference between 20.20 and 25/25, was thinking the same thing about quality untill I got a few more weapon upgrades and level ups. Still dont know hout it compares to straight dex or str.

And mages were still strong in DS3, they always have been and probably always will be.
Magic is the unlabeled easy mode. There are many ways to make these games easier, they just are not labled.
Magic ALWAYS overcomes melee in every fantasy game. This is just an accepted way of doing things. Which is why you find enchantments and infusions and buffs and talismans to utilise magic in a way that can help the melee build.

Pretty sure in other games it was around 20/20 or 25/25 where quality really started showing its benefit. 40/40 or 40/25 was just the end game stat spread.
