ELDEN RING
Where to spend runes early
So first off, I am REALLY bad at these kind of games. I generally try to stick with turn-based (or active time) games because I'm not super coordinated. I'm trying to have fun but once you zone into a boss area you're completely screwed - if you die you can't retrieve your runes and leave so if the boss is too hard you lose everything.
Just lost all my runes from the first 3-4 hours of gameplay (including beating what I felt was a super difficult boss) and feel like I have to restart from scratch, but I never found any way to spend runes beyond some crafting items at the first vendor. So I'm super bummed but would love to at least spend the runes wisely early while I'm getting a feel for the game.
Any advice? If this happens again on a new game I'm not sure I'd have it in me to keep playing.

Follow the light ;) you're not far away from being able to level up.
I've been using them to level up....

The game doesnt really tell you, but you have to move towards the objective untill you've gone past like half a dozen campsites. You need to rest at the one that is behind the human camp. Then a character appears and allows you to level up.

Idk why they wait so long with that in an open world game where players can potentially go in other directions for a dozen of hours first.
Yeah. Not making it abundantly clear where and how you gain the ability to level up is one of the stupidest game design decisions I have every seen in my entire gaming career.

Preventing you from levelling up because you didn't wander off in some random direction and rest at the correct location is mind boggling stupid in an open-world game.

OMG thanks. I had no idea. I finally found that campsite and the leveling character appeared. I didn't have any runes but at least I have a place to start farming from :) Thanks again for a helpful reply!
You should prioritize equipment upgrades heavily over levels. The difference is massive, you get much more damage and survivability from upgrading equipment at a much more rune efficient rate. Levels are secondary
