Ultrawide Support (21:9, 32:9, etc.)

Good Evening All,

This is an open letter to the developers themselves :)

How Ultrawide Support is PROPERLY Implemented.
SOURCE: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Glossary:Scaling

PROPER implementation of this support stretches the viewable area as large as possible while maintaining aspect ratio, then increases the field of view to fit the screen resolution, allowing more of the game world to be visible. Some games may only increase the field of view horizontally (Hor+) or vertically (Vert+). The most optimal, and preferred, scaling behaviors are Expand Aspect Ratio (Hor+/Vert+) for modern high definition games, and Pixel-perfect for games that focus on lower resolutions or retro-based art styles.

With proper implementation, a game designed for 16:9 will show more of the game world when played on a 21:9 (Hor+) monitor without losing any of the “reference” field of view it would have on a 16:9 monitor.

Atleast *4,800,000* (4.00%) of All Steam users are on an Ultrawide screen resolution.
SOURCE: https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

That's more people using Ultrawide (monitors) than those who are on 4K (monitors).
I myself own a 3440x1440 monitor and unfortunately many developers have flat-out not supported these ratios (21:9, 32:9) either at all or as a badly implemented after-thought. My question - Could the Dev team PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE implement full *NATIVE* Ultrawide Monitor support and everything that entails (User Interface, etc.)?

So many Ultrawide users in the community feel like they are either an afterthought or not considered part of the target audience.

With so many games being developed to the typical 1920x1080 / 16:9 and all others depending on a code-savvy member of the community to "FIX" this oversight for the rest of the community, it is very frustrating to see the same old problem surfacing in NEW games.

Ultrawide monitor ratios have been supported for over 17 years already.

It's time to get serious about this. Half-Life 2 (2004) had full native support for all monitor ratios and ultrawide screen resolutions. This has been supported for over 17 years already from both big-budget studios and even tiny, 3-person development teams over the last 2 decades. It was supported natively, even back in an era when 1080p wasn't the common resolution for the masses.

Myself and MANY other people would be grateful to you all if you provided full NATIVE support for other monitor ratios besides the common 16:9 ratio. Your games would LITERALLY reach a wider audience. There is truly no reason Ultrawide screen support should ever be unaccounted-for in a game's development cycle, especially when it directly results in a loss of profit by excluding a VIABLE audience willing to pay for your product. Thank you so much for your time

Very Respectfully,
~ S I L E N C E R

Just one thing: Being a small team is no excuse nowadays. I've seen 1 man dev team properly implement 21:9 in their games. FROM games are super easily modified. We all know require literally one minute of hex editing 1/2 values.

There is literally no way FROM aren't choosing not to support it. They are aware of its existence, they are well aware of their community's interest in it title after title, yet they decide not to officially implement it. They've got 4 major titles in the pc market, one of those just got 21:9 because it got "remastered" by a different studio. Otherwise it would have been the same story. They even take enough time to tell you "we ain't gonna roll with you guys, yet again, for the fifth time".

So yeah, they know, and they don't care. They never cared. I love FROM's work but as much as I can praise the highs, I can and will criticize their lows and ask them to be addressed, just like this one.

Edit: I want to add that I agree with them being a close minded studio. And there lies the answer. They do know it exists, they do know we want it, they do know how to do it. They specifically choose not to do it. They don't need to tell you they don't - Even when they have said it already.

Secondly, yes please. I don't own an ultrawide monitor, and as I said on that thread the amount of people that play on anything other than 16:9 is very small (relatively speaking at least), but I agree is something that should be natively supported at this point.

Dark Souls remastered has perfect UW support, so there is hope.
But seeing they didnt patch it in for DS2/3 and you have to fix it by yourself in a way that eventually bans you from online play is infuriating.

PLEASE add native UW Resolutions in Elden Ring. I am so looking forward to this game.

But i think the devs are not reading in steam forums, maybe we should reach out to fromsoftware in other ways.

If you choose to buy a niche monitor, don't be surprised that you get equally niche support for it.

Dark Souls Remastered was an exception, not a rule, so stop mentioning it as an example.

Its not an exception. Are you new to PC gaming?
UW-support is common for years. Even the smallest indie games have uw support.
Only japanese console ports are lacking behind.

They are the exception and thats a shame.

I meant games in general, because that's what I said. I've been taking it for granted for years. But yeah, you don't seem to have an ultrawide monitor and thats fine, but you dont really know what you're talking about.

I realized that's true now that you mention it. The games I play that don't support it are all ports from Japan. It is a shame because the games are good.

Yeah, i love japanese game, always been. Huge jRPG fan.
Thats the reason why it is so disappointing. I know ultrawide users are still a small base,
but everyone I know that tried playing on uw felt mind blown.
It just feels way more naturally and immersive.

the way I see it, the reasons why some games don't support ultrawide are because: 1. fixed resolution UI and 2. real-time rendered cut scenes were made with 16:9 and only 16:9 in mind. both problems require artistic effort in order to support ultrawide, especially the latter. and if they don't have native ultrawide support, it's very unlikely they would add it later.

Its not artistic. There is a mod to fix uw support in most games aroubd 24-48h after launch.
The problem with mods are, that some people got banned in DS3 for UW fixes.

Cutscenes are the least problem, because it would be absolutely fine if they keep those in 16:9. I only care about 21:9 in-game.

Wouldnt be the first time a game gets patched for uw support. But it's more sad if it isn't built in from launch. You can count the dev teams that are not implement uw-res on one hand.

Its bandai namco and sadly they don’t have enough brain cells to add ultrawide support even tho game engine supports it.

Dread Lord 2021 年 11 月 14 日 下午 3:57
