Waifus Over Husbandos is a visual novel about a lady's accidental proposal to a popular teenager.

As a story heavy game, you can expect to smash through textboxes. Every so often you will encounter choices, which will affect outcomes in the story. There are few choices to make, as this is a very linear game. If you press the "esc" key, the game will minimize. This is much, much preffered over other applications that close with the "esc" key.

The story starts with the protagonist (Akuru) recounting a tale of romance. In the story, an alien professes her love to a man on Earth (out of the blue). Akuru questions how people (in real life) find love, if they just meet some stranger that "sweeps them away". This recollection strongly alludes to the rest of the story.

Akuru has a gambling problem. She sinks her paychecks into a mobile gacha game called Kensho (or "Sellswords"), egged on by her friend Shino. She's after the ("Super Rare") character Kohee-kun, and the last of her money is riding on one (randomized) pull. Before she had a chance to do the deed, an arrogant girl offers to "use her luck" to win Akuru something good. Against all odds, she pulls Kohee-kun, and Akuru spills her guts about how much she loves Kohee-kun, and how she's going to marry him.

Little did Akuru know, the girl thought she intended those words for her.

The next day, Ren tracks Akuru down, her "future fiance." It takes Akuru a bit to figure out why Ren thinks she proposed to her, but she decides to entertain her. Ren is very, very pushy and is (suddenly) in love with her. Since the events of yesterday, Akuru figures she can take advantage of Ren's luckiness for her mobile gaming.

Akuru is a twenty-six year old, and she's never loved anyone but (fictional) men from Kensho. Ren's a young, young teenager who's super trendy. Their tale together is one of age and social barriers, and one of sexuality.

The title screen is static and fanciful. You can easily change your choice language, and preferences. There are plenty 'o settings to tweak relating to text and sound. The "Extra" selection serves a gallery, where you can review images, movies and music. The developers snuck their other works in under "Official". It's not too intrusive, so I give this self-advertsing a pass.

The portraits are high quality, but not varied. Each character has plenty of facial expressions, but I was disappointed by the lack of variety of outfits and poses.

- The Goods -
The artwork is awesome! I'd venture to say professional. There isn't anything lewd (at least in the base game), but there are lovey-dovey scenes and the like. I thoroughly enjoyed the watercolor-like aesthetic the images had.

This is a highly regarded game, and I can see why. It's far-out tale, and starts like a generic manga. But by golly, it's a sweet lil' tale. I'd hop on this title when it goes on sale.

If you're here for a nice romance story, then be prepared to be frustrated.
It's basically straight x lesbian girl with barely any payoff for the struggle.
After a certain point we were just rooting for Ren to give up on Akuru. It was that painful to watch.

If you can stomach light spoilers, here's what's wrong:

OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos is generally a rather poor work of the visual novel. Despite having excellent artwork and character design, both the plot and characterization of the game are very unsatisfactory. The only selling point of the game is the love story between the two girls, but still not able to leave a deep impression on the player after the game, the music and voice acting is also relatively ordinary.

Fortunately, OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos' plot isn't very long, so players won't have to suffer for long. For players who are looking for a light-hearted and brainless plot, who are interested in girls' love, and who can also tolerate certain logic holes and unreasonable behavior of the characters, this game may be a good choice. Only recommended purchasing at a discount.

who needs waifu or husbando when you can just have yuri couples

It's conflicting giving this bad a review because it's not a bad game per say but unfortunately.. This game should be called Husbando's over waifus because that's MC's mindset for the whole game. It's yuri bait, plain and simple. Unsatisfying build up and ending for those who want to play actual yuri. If it wasn't marketed as such, then I would've enjoyed it more.

OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos seemed like a quite unique game with the plot description with a “game of cat and mouse” between the characters. By the way, I do like both animals although they don’t exactly appear in this game. I sort of feel like they do have a hate-and-love relationship which made the plot even more interesting to me. I’m sure you exactly know which pair I am hinting at: Tom and Jerry! I absolutely adored that they didn’t get along at first glance, yet, completely do complete each other. I can relate to this example, as it applies to the protagonists in OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos as well where things might seem complicated, but they just belong together in the end.

OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos opens with Akuru Hayahoshi hanging around in a cafe with her friend Shino that shares her special interest. You see, Akuru is an otaku that loves her 2D guys and isn’t interested in “real” guys in any way – let alone girls. Unfortunately, she is pretty unlucky when it comes to RNG and thus, it doesn’t really help that she has to pull her husband through a gacha. I guess she got lucky for once when she happens to meet Ren Furutachi in the very same cafe who claims to have insane luck, so she manages to pull the card Akuru desires. Being excited, Akuru proposes to her 2D husband although Ren accidentally thinks it was meant for her. Ren falls in love at first sight with Akuru and thus, the drama begins..

Surprisingly, OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos turned out more refreshing than I assumed. It’s no secret that I’m an ultimate yuri fan, due to their cuteness and this visual novel definitely fits into that description. Now, I know many people who don’t like an aspect like this in their yuri games, but I loved that Akuru wasn’t interested in girls at first. The thing that I found so charming here was that liking girls didn’t get treated as obvious here. While I certainly do agree that there is nothing unusual about liking the same sex, it isn’t always clear and some people only start to notice their preferences later on. With Akuru being confused about Ren liking her, it felt like a very natural reaction given that she was only interested in fiction guys before meeting her.

This gave room for great character development as obviously, Akuru will change a lot throughout the game. She first thought that Ren was very odd, yet she soon notices that liking the same sex isn’t something that can be considered as unnormal since it’s the complete opposite: Something normal. I always appreciate when characters do learn something from their experiences which is the case here with Akuru. It isn’t like she was rude with other people but her viewpoint just changed drastically after getting close to Ren. I always like to think that through the power of love people can be motivated to change into an even better person.

Talking about love, OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos is a very short game, yet the romance was so well executed that I could understand the feelings of Akuru and Ren just fine. While it’s obvious that Ren likes Akuru first, it’s noticeable that Akuru reciprocated her feelings quickly – the clue is just that she didn’t notice it right away. Actually, the unawareness was pretty adorable as we, as the reader, already know how she feels before she even realizes it although I just wanted her to finally admit it so I could see more of the fluffy romance scenes. Most of the game revolves around the development of the couple although having little romantic moments only made them even more special to me.

To be honest, I was quite irritated by Ren in the beginning as well since she was very clingy. Later on, I liked that part of her, since she was so straight forward and wasn’t afraid to openly show her feelings to Akuru. Sometimes I pitied Akuru a little bit since she felt uncomfortable at first, but I guess everything is allowed in war and love. I think Akuru might have never realized her true feelings if it wasn’t for Ren’s persistence and it’s definitely worth it to fight for the one you love. Her straightforwardness avoided misunderstandings as well – and for once – I was delighted to read through a story without endless problems due to the communication failing although this game offers plenty of different kinds of drama that couldn’t be avoided. But these are good kinds of drama.

In total, there are three endings available in OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos although one of them is a bad end. Only one choice is critical to achieving a certain end and the ones before don’t matter for that, as long as you didn’t get the bad end. This end made me feel quite unsatisfied and I wanted to achieve another one immediately after playing through it, which isn’t surprising, and I was glad that the other ends had a nice conclusion for our protagonists. One of the ends leads to an epilogue episode that is unlockable with the adult patch which is acquirable through these websites: MangaGamer[www.mangagamer.com], JAST USA[jastusa.com] and Denpasoft[denpasoft.com] for $5.

Graphic-wise, OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos is gorgeous and has a unique vibe with its yurilicious graphic. The CGs are especially beautiful so I ended up admiring them for a couple of minutes before being able to process what is happening during the story. Sadly, the sprites don’t have a lot of variety, except for the facial expressions, and thus, they felt less lively. This leads to slight confusion as well when Ren is wearing a costume in a CG but there wasn’t a sprite with that outfit on her. All in all, it wasn’t a big deal to me although it was noticeable that the characters always had the same pose. Additionally, the voice-acting is high-quality which helped with the immersion.

OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos is a fluffy and cute yuri visual novel. Although this game is rather on the short side, game lengthwise, I still enjoyed every moment with Akuru and Ren. Akuru grows a lot during her time with Ren and learns what true love is. Of course, it isn’t always easy, yet, this visual novel avoids unnecessary drama while it still adds just the right amount of it so it’s still very entertaining to go through the story. Comedy isn’t missing here either that balances the dramatic events just fine. OshiRabu: Waifus Over Husbandos is a wonderful game that revolves around two lovers who just want to stay by each other’s side and in addition to this, I can wholeheartedly recommend it anyone who is into yuri games.
