too hard? go play lenient
too long? go watch tiktok or something this is a product you pay and Hakita did a brilliant work making the levels long without them feeling boring/repetitive
Like "this may be an accessibility concern" dark, but I know opinions are like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥
outside of those two things ive been lovin it
-I actually liked how jarringly off this layer felt. No breakcore drums, a stark aesthetic, and even open/maze level design. It was super refreshing for being so different and it quite worked for me.
-The core is annoying but it super easy to quick kill if you use certain weapons together and parry the projectile. Consistent one cycle. That said if you don't do that the core is kinda ass lol. The 7-4 level itself is SO cool and fun, and the music is fantastic imo.
-They do feel kind of obnoxious compared to guttermen. There are quick kill methods like the magnet rocket ride return to sender instakill, but I appreciate that it will likely be adjusted all the same. The fact you can parry the mines for a free health refill is awesome though
-7-3's last two arenas and the last arena of 7-4 are pretty catastrophically laggy for me yeah. It's playable but it doesn't feel pleasant. Hopefully this can be fixed cause I quite like how insane these arenas are for enemy density.
With Violence, you have a bright labyrinth, a dark battlefield which is sort of reminiscent of a war-torn field with all its trench-like areas, a forest so dark that the game gives you a flashlight (why didn't V1 use said flashlight during 0-S?), and a desolate wasteland.
I'm just wondering... what is the theme for Violence?
The prelude is a factory of sorts.
Limbo is a fake paradise.
Lust is a city being torn down.
Gluttony is reminiscent of the inside of a large creature.
Greed's appearance takes inspiration from the deserts of Egypt.
Wrath is all about water.
Heresy is a corrupted church.
Violence has no core theme. Is it supposed to be chaotic to represent how universal violence is?
Don't get me wrong, I love this update, and aside from the theme of Violence, I have no notable qualms with it. I would have just preferred a more uniform appearance for the layer.
It's not really themed looking at it at face value, but it looks like Hakita is trying to make a closer connection between Ultrakill and Dante's Inferno. 7-1 is the only exception, serving as an area 'outside' the layer existing as the barrier between the upper layers and Violence - it takes inspiration from Daedalus' labyrinth, which also housed the Minotaur.
The other three levels are pretty direct references to Inferno. 7-2 is based on the first ring of Violence, which can be seen through the bloody river that runs through the level - the Phlegethon, which contains murderers, tyrants and war-makers, which could also be why 7-2 is a battlefield.
7-3 is the second ring, the Woods of the Suicides, where those who attempted or committed suicide are kept and turned into trees. This level is probably the closest comparison since the trees in 7-3 have humanoid textures in their trunks and branches.
Finally, 7-4 is the Plain of Burning Sand, where those violent against God, Art and Nature are kept. It could be said that the manmade constructs of the Earthmovers are crimes against nature, which is why they're found there.
Overall, to me, there's no real theme to Violence, outside of being a closer connection to Inferno. It could be themed around duality between 'peace' (or at least as peaceful as Ultrakill can get) and war, which is seen in the contrast between 7-1/7-3 and 7-2/7-4, or the large arenas which interrupt the 'calmness' of 7-3, but that might be a bit of a stretch.
