What role would it fill?
B-Wing could be a bomber role. They have heavy weaponry like a high intensity laser beam that can cut through heavy capital ships' armour as a special weapon.
Or they could use it a special-class role (something like only one person in the squadron could fly) as a multirole. Slightly better fighter, bomber and support capability. On the empire side, to balance it out they can give them the TIE Defender.
What would be the Empires counterpart? What use would the Y-Wing have if the B-Wing was implemented? It doesn't really fill any special role that doesn't overlap with any of the other ships.
Also, the beam was only on the prototype from what I recall.
I made an edit after you post this. In the empire side, they could get the TIE Defender. That's my fav TIE fighter.. Heavily armored, plus shield, and hyperdrive and advanced weaponry. Thanks to Thrawn strategic excellence compared to Tarkin's doctrine.
Yeah the beam was just on the prototype, but that could work in canon as well saying "we've perfected the beam from the prototype and will be improving the B-Wing after the battle of Endor."
That's the problem. The B-Wing is within the lore basically a strike bomber with more fire power than basically every other fighter craft outside of the missile boat and maybe the TIE-Defender.
It's hard to fit into a completive pvp game. Just like the TIE-Defender is hard to fit in without making it either OP, or not fitting it's legend.
Both ships could be useful as unlocks in a game mode to end a match quicker by giving one side a OP ship to finish quicker.
Now, B-Wing and TIE-Defender would be perfect for handicap games with friends and a story expansion to have fun with those "op" ships.
TIE defender ceased production even before the battle of Yavin. With the Empire in decline it wouldn't make much sense that they would start suddenly producing them in numbers.
And more importantly, unless it was given a bunch of nerfs it would literally be better in every way compared to the TIE fighter, Interceptor and bomber.
"Hero" or unlockable ships does not fit the concept of Squadrons either.
But the TIE Defender would dunk on the B-Wing. The TIE Defender has stronger antiship weapons, is faster, has better shields, and is more manuverable. They aren't even in the same class of ships. The TIE Defender is simply the best fieldable ship in that era of starwars. Its actual weakness isn't possible to be shown in a game like this, as its financial and maintence.
You could add a game mode with limited avaible ships. Like an ISD gets 6 Defender, 72 TIE-Fighters, 4 Reapers, 12 Interceptors, etc
And players need to decide when in the battle is the right moment to bringt the defenders. Alas, imho this is way to hard to properly implement. So I am with you that I am glad that they did not touch those ships for completive modes.
Else you end up with everyone flying a defender or missile boat, while a alliance teams are all in B-Wings or whatever OP ship they get.
Tie/ln, Tie/in. Tie/b and Reapers are fine for the imps and so are Y, X A and U-Wings for the alliance.
TIE Punisher, TIE Aggressor or the XG-1 Star Wing, more so the Star Wing would match the B-Wing although the Aggressor may be a better fit. You would still end up with the problems you highlighted doubly worse Imperial side. XG-1 would be pretty gamebreaking for Imps. People keep saying the TIE Defender but if they brought out the XG-1 or even the TIE Phantom without thinking of a good way to balance it that would be goodbye Mister Rebel Scum.
If they were absolute madmen and canonised the TIE Hunter or Avenger then nobody would play Rebels ever again
Yeah, that's true.. But I wouldn't be surprised if they have a handful of units lying around somewhere or that Sienar managed to manufacture a very limited number of units reserved for the very best of pilots before the battle of Endor.
And yeah, it needs to be nerfed to make it balance, but it can still be 'slightly' better than all of the classes combined into a multirole fighter instead.
Even if it's just "slightly" better than all the other ships, why would anyone choose anything but the TIE Defender?
The only real solution would be nerfing the Defender even further to the point where it doesn't follow canon and is just a poor portrayal of the ship just to use the model. OR introduce "hero" or special ships that you unlock in a game, which imo would be even worse, because such systems turns your teammates into opponents in the race to get the special ship first.
We do not need everything for competitive modes, especially when Defenders are super rare and B-Wings are not super wide-spread either.
Though Punisher as a super bomber sounds cool, same for B-Wing. That would need a special game mode. Something lkie a "Escort" mode maybe? Bring the bomber to the target, blast it, and make sure that you intercept all the fighters that try to to blow up the bomber.
Or even better, use the Punisher for the imps and the StarFortress for the Alliance.
