Really, just take it slow, use cover as much as possible and learn what all the various enemies can do and how to react to them. Don't ever sit out in the open, though, the desert has several long range threats that can bombard you for a lot of damage like the Bandit Retainer or is it Reclaimer? I forget. (The tall sniper guys with the wide brimmed hats.)
Stage 1 just has a lot of melee and very few high threat ranged enemies, so you're going from not having to worry about high damage ranged enemies to suddenly encountering a lot of them, and the desert also begins throwing very tanky enemies at you.
You'll need to get comfortable with this though, it doesn't get better going forward. Stage 3 and 4 have lots of combinations of high threat melee and high threat ranged enemies who can kill you from far away.
Favor guns with good accuracy, or guns you are accurate with. You'll need to, from here on, be able to take down threats fast and some times from a considerable range. But that's just how I view it.
If you're able to continue to improve, sooner or later, you'll be waltzing through areas, marveling at why you ever thought they were a challenge. That's part of what makes this game so damn good. The better you get, the more it shows and the more you feel it.
The former sends homing projectiles that will come at you even with broken line of sight and, to top it off, don't make noise when they strike (you or an obstacle).
The latter will charge at you with a spray weapon that will quickly overwhelm your shield/armor.
Also, don't underestimate the Bandit Gunner. If you get too close to them they might deplete your shield/armor faster than expected.
So yeah: the best advice I can give is to simply keep at it. That's the point of the game. :^)

Guy's got an antisocial streak in 'em. I wouldn't take anything they say with more than a grain.
Doesn’t seem like gossip if its readily apparent from a single post from you. If you didn’t want people to assume you’re an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, you wouldn’t frequently make posts indicating so; maybe you should figure out why it is you feel its necessary to feed off other’s negative reactions and behaviors.
The best early weapons to look out for are:
Illusion
Woodpecker
Aura of Venom
Angelic Aura
And for Crown Prince specifically:
Anything Lightning to cause Shock for elemental combo with Smoke Grenades, makes a super damaging debuff called miasma
Even the garbage Lightning blast and Star Devourer are worth using on solo Crown Prince.
Thunderclap Gloves without bonus elemental effect chance is a bit rough though.
*ignore the part I said about fire+decay*
You typically want rapid fire weapons for the Talent you should get leveled quickly: Battlefield Support. This lets you have a very generous supply of Smoke Grenades. Get that and Shields.
