Just to try to make these instructions more clear.. as you walk down the stairs (past the immobilised boss) a cutscene will start where the boss orders his thugs to kill you. Immediately as the cutscene starts, you are still in control of Max, but it's from a weird third person viewpoint. Moving the mouse left and right turns you, and pressing W will walk you forward. This is very uncomfortable because you have played the game until now from a first person viewpoint.
You have about 3 seconds to turn back up the stairs and run up and to the right, and (and this is important) well into the room above (the room you were in before you went down the stairs). If you get stuck or do not go far enough, you will get shot.
The thugs will be well up the stairs and pretty much into the room by the time the cutscene ends, and if they had a clear shot at you on the way up they will kill you before the cutscene ends and you are handed back control of Max.
If you make it far enough into the room above, when you regain control of Max you can engage bullet time and shoot the gangsters that have by now come up the stairs.
2023 and i had to deal with this glitch but your comment saved me
