Max Payne

Max Payne

Game won't start, even with patch.
I already tried installing the patch I saw in the forums and the game won't start regardless. It says "running" while nothing happens. No amount of fixes have done anything to improve the experience.

A common mistake is that the fix gets installed in the wrong directory.
For steam game you should be installing in 'Steam\steamapps\common' the target '\Max Payne' will be added automatically and will be shown in the Browse input field. If you select the actual Max Payne directory itself, fix files will land one directory too deep, for example:
-> 'Steam\steamapps\common\Max Payne\Max Payne' - and things don't work then.

Did you choose sound patch or use the sound wrapper? If you used the sound patch I think there's a batch file you have to run to convert the audio. Not sure about the sound wrapper though.

Yea, the sound patch will automatically run the batch file with this 2019 patch, and it might be a good idea to try that, because it includes some diagnostics that will for example tell you if you installed everything in the right directory. If you get the red screen something is definitely wrong.

The wrapper doesn't need to run a batch file.

edit: if you do get the red screen from sound patch, screenshot it and show me, maybe i can see from that what's going on.

Haha great you got it working! Maybe I should add this solution to the page as a 'last resort' chapter.

And no I'm not making any revenue for this, but I might put a paypal button next to the 'order chikens here' one. ;)

Have fun playing!

I was getting an InstallShield problem, with the message 'An Installation support file could not be installed. Catastrophic failure.'
That was a bit ominous, so I renamed the folder InstallShield Installation Information in c:\Program Files (86) to OldInstallShield Installation Information and the game installed.

This fix it all patch solved all my issues, so thanks for all your hard work @darkje
