This only works with Tank Vehicles
And you can make it easier to squish infantry again by making the go prone with a few shots first, or have enough tanks, that they wont have anywhere to go, that they wont be squished by one of your tanks etc.
Mwahahahaha! For the Glory of Kane!
If your tactic is failing, you need to think about what's wrong.
Easy solutions:
Don't send masses of infantry against tanks.
Don't send a few tanks into masses of infantry.
Even if your units survive, splash damage will wreck your own infantry and your own tanks. You'll take far more damage, and lose far more units.
Position your units correctly. Bring some anti-infantry units. Sometimes the best strategy is just let your tanks shoot normally instead of trying to crush every last minigunner.
As for your infantry not evading incoming tanks, you can just give them orders to scatter or move aside. There's no such things as "not given the tools", the loading screen hint even mentioned about the scatter command. Tiberian Dawn enemy vehicles will drive over your troops if you attack too close so this is usually not an issue if you use bazookas. I do find it annoying as well that your infantry will automatically get crushed if you don't watch over them but I got over it and used tanks or make sure my infantry keeps scattering.
Have a guide.

They also don't fire as they dodge. So your infantry can take them out while the tank keeps them busy.
The game is old and uses plenty of dirty tricks on you. But everything is tied to specific conditions and sometimes units even bug out and do absolutely nothing. I even had a tank sitting right on top of an infantry unit and they shot at each other, because the crush simply never triggered.
