Am I remembering C&C engineers wrong?
So I just played GDI mission 2, where you start with just half destroyed barracks and you get some reinforcements, including MCV and 3 engineers. I tried repairing the barracks by sending in an engineer, as I could have sworn that was something you could do. But I couldn't, the green arrows don't show up.

Am I remembering things wrong? I could have sworn you already could repair buildings like that in C&C:TD. After all, why else deliver engineers as reinforcements, they're useless and pointless if they can't repair those barracks that way.

I don't think it was in the Original. Can't even confirm RA. First time I can remember is in TS.

Nope, not in the original. It';s at least in Tiberian Sun, not sure about Red Alert 1.

maybe you're supposed to use them to hijack other buildings? i'm not sure i started with the nod campaign

yeh there only for taking bases. later games its repair as well like bridges and stuff in TS

Engineers in TibDawn only captured. They can repair in Red Alert 1 though.
No you can't use engineers for repairs. That was the thing in KKND games since there you couldn't repair buildings just by pressing a button.
Haven't been playing C&C much, been on RA but I just found out in order to capture a building with engineer it has to be damaged (red color bar) first before capturing
just a tip for anyone curious in this thread

Nope, the enemy buildings are all in a well-defended base; a base who's defenses you still have to take down; no point in walking engineers up there. The mission also does not ask you to capture anything, just destroy the base (in particular refinery). Since you can't build vehicles yet, a couple of Humvees, or an APC would be a lot more useful. You get three completely pointless engineers, that will just stand there doing nothing for the next ten minutes to a quarter of an hour, possible to the end of the misison if you decide not use them and just destroy.

That's only in RA, I don't remember if it's the same in RA2, but in TD and the other Tiberium games engineers capture at state of health of the building.

Do not forget that engineers capture transport helicopters too. This is incredibly important for some missions.

While it is not a required objective for sure to capture the enemy base, that is their intended usage on that mission for sure. And I classifinyg the enemy base as heavily defended is a bit of a stretch really

GDI mission 2, base considered heavily defended??
Okay.

Tiberian Sun is when engineers could heal buildings. (bridges too)

Okay.

You think you're just going to walk some engineers in there right at the beginning of the mission without soldiers to support them and you will succeed at capturing anything?
