Before you start a new game load up your most recent save and do a manual save, you can load those at any time through the main menu > load game option. At this point exit the game. Now you want to go ahead your back up your savegames, just in case. The save files are located in your local appdata folder, c:\users\<your name>\local\KojimaProductions\DeathStranding\<your user id>\

Make a copy of all your saves and back them up. Once that's complete go ahead and start a new game. The autosave will then overwritten with the new game you start but your manual save(s) you made earlier will always be there. I'm not sure if the game has a limit to how many manual saves you can have which is why you should back them up, just in case.

Launch the original edition, go to any delivery terminal in the game, open your cuff links, and select "System" -> "Export Save Data". This will create a copy of your save file on your PC's local storage that the Director's Cut can auto-detect.

Close the original edition of the game, launch the Director's Cut, and on the title screen, select "Load Game (Death Stranding Save Data)". This will then create a new save file for the Director's Cut using your imported data.

Notes:
  • Be sure to finish any ongoing order for Sam before exporting.
  • On the first launch after the import, you might see a "corrupted data" error. You can just hit "OK" and ignore it, as it won't affect the game or your progress moving forward.
  • When you load your imported save on the Director's Cut, all the prior achievements you unlocked in the original edition will automatically unlock when you're in the game.
