Well, they are separate stories but share the same world just like DOS games are as well. In theory you could play them either way but WotR does have improvements to gameplay that will make it hard to go back to Kingmaker after. Basic functionality like turn-based mode and rotating camera just don't exist in KM.

Turn based is in Kingmaker.

Turn-based mode exists in KM and camera rotation exists as a mod but is useless anyway (the maps in KM are designed to be navigable in locked isometric mode, rotating the camera just confuses you).

Kingmaker is slightly easier for beginners to get into (although note that Normal in KM is harder than Normal in WotR) as there are fewer classes and no mythic abilities to overwhelm you. The enemies also don't scale up quite as aggressively as they do in WotR.

On the other hand, KM has some frustrating design choices (trap encounters at low levels, time limits that are not clearly explained, a somewhat obtuse kingdom management system you need to read a guide for) that can make WotR an easier game to get into.

I slightly prefer Kingmaker as it feels more cosy, but a lot of people strongly prefer WotR.

Everything @azaris says is correct. Especially the frustrating design choices. As I have said repeatedly, Owlcat is a ♥♥♥♥, adversarial DM especially when judged by tabletop standards. (Yes, I can provide many examples.)

However, they also give you all the tools to overcome their dickery. And in WotR, there are MANY more tools available. Which is why I personally prefer WotR out of the two.

However, if you want to play both. I'd still play Kingmaker first. The QoL improvements of WotR makes it pretty hard to go back IMO. Just... make sure you have at least some mercs and be ready not to rely on magic. Or the last area may brick your playthrough.

You should definitely play Kingmaker first.
Dont go backwards mainly because Kingmaker would feel like downgrade if played after Wotr and in human brain that can be a turn off. So just dont, play Kingmaker first and appreciate Wotr later, more.
Wotr is much more overwhelming as well.

You don't lose anything storywise by not playing Kingmaker. Kingdom management isn't as fun as it sounds, either.

Kingmaker has a few things that will become something of a callback in Wrath of the Righteous. I played Wrath first but when I played Kingmaker it made me appreciate the little Easter eggs and cameos from that game that ended up in Wrath.

wotr has some upgrades that can make playing kingmaker afterwards bit more jarring, though both are great games and go with whichever you prefer first.

This. There are a bunch of little quality-of-life things that are great additions when you go from Kingmaker to WotR, but going the other way would feel like having things taken away.

Definitely play Kingmaker first. Play through it multiple times. Play a solo campaign. Play all the classes you want to play. Then uninstall it and play WotR.

Plus, DLC is still being released for WotR. If you played WotR first, you'd have to come back to it eventually to play new content. Kingmaker is content-complete.

I probably shouldn't speak, because I only played WotR, but I can say that I did not have time to play kingmaker yet after playing over 600h of WotR, people say it is not connected, but there are some recurring characters placed as easter eggs, and generally advise to play kingmaker first, as it is less polished game, and You will feel like You downgraded.

I would say Kingmaker.

Wrath of the Righteous has a lot of quality of life upgrades that don't exist in Kingmaker and it'll be hard to go from Wrath to Kingmaker.

Kingmaker first. Even if you decide to drop it eventually, it's just a good way to ease yourself into the franchise and gradually get familiar with the ruleset. Also, seeing all the changes in WotR afterwards is going to be extra awesome.
