that being said i recommend Fortnite more because I don't play Apex
Apex Legends is a marvelous game. It's probably the only Source engine game out there that doesn't feel like Source engine. Whatever they did with Titanfall 2 to make the shooting mechanics feel so precise and competitive-ready, they did a perfect job. Titanfall 2's movement is perfectly stripped back enough for it to be balanced, and to make the gunfights more the focus. Every corner of this game from the menu to the controls to the visuals feels so snappy, like it's the shooter game made for people who have an instant gratification problem. The main thing that sets it apart in my opinion is the TTK is crazy high, and healing cooldowns are super low, meaning firefights between two seasoned players can last extra long. In this game more than any other, whether or not you die all comes down to the player's skill.
The one negative for Apex with me is I'm personally not a huge fan of the Legends, I feel like they add a little unfairness with the free rotation/unlock thing (Dota is free and has all 120 characters available all the time) and they only get in the way of what could be 100% perfectly balanced gunfights. Kinda sucks that this couldn't just be a great battle royale shooter but they also had to make it a hero shooter too. Oh well. At least it doesn't have bots.
Fortnite is also great, despite what most people say. It's for the more casual gamer sure, but a seasoned shooter player can have some fun plowing through the game. You can say whatever you want about Fortnite but being the most popular online game also means it's among the most optimized and balanced and frequently evolving games out there. The gun mechanics are as Unreal engine as Unreal engine gets, meaning it's mostly in the muscle memory. The building aspects also get too much hate in my opinion, no other popular game has implemented destructible/element based mechanics directly into the movement so seamlessly as Fortnite. Maybe most players don't like it because they refuse to get used to it idk but it adds an entire new dimension to the game and is completely unique. Sure it's become a little goofy and oversaturated at this point but I still believe it remains a fantastic game.
The negative, bots. They ruin the fundamentals of a BR game- coming out on top against 99 actual players is something that's actually impressive, it's why wins get you so pumped. Bots make wins feel completely unrewarding. For this reason alone, Apex Legends forever. Until they add bots too.
Fortnite will get more repetitive. Apex has legends who have passive & active abilities (for better or worse) so you can drop in with a new strategy each round. Fortnite is kinda static in this regard, you will drop into every round with the same circumstances besides the location you dropped in on. Also the behavior of bots are very predictable
