Ubuntu Issues
Recently install Ubuntu 23.10, can't get Apex to run. I have the EAC tool downloaded and tried running on proton Experimental and 8. When i hit play it'll turn the button green like it wants to run and then it just stops.

try to check files, or start steam from console and look on errors. I can start Apex on my Ubuntu without any issues

Figured it out. I had to install i386 architecture using "sudo apkg --add-architecture i386". with Ubuntu being 64 bit and steam running with 32 bit dependencies I was just missing that package. works like a charm now.

Is Apex running better(smoother) on Linux than windows?

yes, but you may not see big difference if you try it on Linux first time

I would say there is slightly better difference. I just prefer Linux over Windows overall and being able to play was a bonus for me.

does it still work for you guys? I'm on Ubuntu 23.10 x86_64 and I can't get past the EAC splash screen.

The latest season broke things. Why they don't see it fit to have a single person test their game with proton before launching an update is beyond me, but they didn't and broke things. (don't get me wrong, obviously linux is a comparatively small portion of the playerbase, but this is a half-hour test that's free to do and the steam deck ALONE likely has around 10-20% of the PS5 playerbase from the purchase numbers that have been made public. Last I checked the PS5 had somewhere in the 40-50 million sales, and if I remember rightly the Steam Deck had a confirmed 3 million sales before the OLED model came out which itself spurred a whole new wave of purchases. So a thirty minute test to check if 10-20% of a PS5-equivalent playerbase can actually play the game.)

It's still playable with either proton GE, proton experimental, or proton hotfix though. The latter two can be installed from your steam library, the former you either already have installed or don't need to worry about. Personally I'd suggest going with proton hotfix since it'll get fixes soonest. (assuming that the community writes fixes in-proton before the developers of the game get their act together and fix it themselves)

With that said while it IS playable, picking up a weapon with a charm on it (or spectating someone that picks up and/or equips a weapon with a charm on it) will cause the game to hitch for ~5 seconds, (this can be mitigated by unequiping all of your charms) model textures for legends may not load leaving them as grey statues, and a few other menus will have hitches as well. To be honest I'm not even entirely sure how they managed to break things like this. Generally proton has gotten damn near flawless in terms of compatibility (not perfectly flawless, but not even windows has "perfectly flawless" compatibility, I mean you can see the dozens of posts about "the anticheat is not running" errors yourself by just going to page 2 of the steam discussions) and it seems like they've somehow managed to bork their texture loading process so hard that it causes the entire game to hitch when ran in proton. Proton's main "incompatibilities" are anticheats not accepting it as a legitimate client, (which is to say it's main problem is developers being too lazy to flip a switch) not texture loading. I can't recall any similar texture-based incompatibility ever, at least not in any game I've looked at. They must have done some seriously cursed crap in their texture loading pipeline for an issue like this to crop up. It's a shame too since, at least on my machine, proton runs/ran the game far smoother than it ever did on windows. (like, order of magnitude better)

It's still playable once you get in the game, but the new season did introduce a lot of jank unfortunately. Fortunately most of it is cosmetic, but those hitches really can bite you if you get unlucky with them.

More fun to try and get Debian to work, I don't support or use anything ubuntu. It's funded.
