Once on the first launch of the game on my OLED TV the TV enabled HDR mode while the game was kept in SDR. This resulted in a washed out and bright main menu, but the fix was simply to enter the graphics menu of the game and re-enable HDR. After that, the game looked fine again.
after that my windows 10 HDR setting was switched off (i am still wondering) and nvidia control panel was limited to 82 hz on my Acer Predator x27 monitor
after a reboot all was fine again W10 had HDR on and Monitor was back at 120 for full RGB HDR 1000 (mode 444 so not limited)
also switching on HDR in game was not a problem and the monitor osd also shows not limited so full HDR in RGB444 mode active at 120 Hz Gsync (when going to 144 Hz the DPI can only deliver RGB422 due to bandwith limitation)
anyhow the game is not as shiny as tomb raiders HDR implementation (which imho comes from the grey world as it is in star wars . but i am just at the start of game)
but compared to a youtube walkthru video the HDR on setting does not really much (looks quite the same as the non HDR (SDR) video on youtube
the lights / bulbs / reflections seem not to be any higher/brighter
the gfx looks pretty the same on HDR and SDR video on youtube
From what i've read on numerous websites when going to the windows display settings and enabling windows HDR its really just enabling software HDR (fake HDR), thats why when at the desktop screen in windows , or in the Fallen Order, it looks washed out, so just about all games needing HDR enabled through windows is just fake HDR
before reading about the fake windows HDR i enabled it through windows all the time and thought all the pc games, looked like crap, but now i don't enable windows HDR at all and the games that do support true HDR, really stand out, one example would be shadow of the tomb raider, it looks really amazing without windows HDR but with it on it just looks horrific
basically if a game detects an HDR display automatically then your good to go most of the time..
and if you have to enable windows HDR for a game e.g the Fallen Order then the game only supports software HDR, making it look washed out
Also even if the game didn't have HDR support, Windows cannot affect exclusive full screen applications. That means as long as your game isn't on borderless mode or windowed mode, Windows cannot affect it at all (even with HDR tonemapping)
